For example I can burn 1000 calories an hour on an elliptical trainer at the gym

How many calories could I burn doing say 3 20 minute moto's ?

Wouldn't it depend a lot on the intensity?

If I do my concept rower for 40 minutes(approx. 10,000 meters) at a heart rate of 150(55-75% max range I burn around 860-900. IF I could ride moto for an hour I'd say it should be no problem burning 1300-1500 calories. Turbo

I think it is hard to say because the adrenaline rush of riding or racing spikes your heart rate. Example being. When I do a 30 minute moto of mx my average heart rate will be around 185 and max around 195. With the same heart rate monitor it is all I can do to even hold 180 for a short period of time on my road bicycle before I feel like I am going to die and there is no way in hell I am getting to 195 before I collapse. But I figure mx at an intense pace burns between 900-1200 cal/hr.

Sure but there can be some standard gauge like

MX low intensity = putting around

MX medium intensity just doing moto's at a steady pace

MX intense race mode.

,I know when we mountain bike it has a lot to do with how much climbing we are doing. So intensity definitely matters. Same as a rough rutted track takes more energy than a smooth track.

Using my polar recording HRM and software, I see 1000-1100 cal/hr rates when going all out. Just riding around, about 700-800 cals/hr. I'm 52, so younger in shape guys may see lower expenditure rates than me.

I'm gonna go with 1500-1800 (600 or so per session), assuming about 80-90% intensity. What do I win? Mountain bikin hard with Willy B, he burns like 600 in our half hour'ish loop.

I wore a heart rate monitor at every GP I raced and for 40 min my average heart rate was 182... Looking between 1200-1400 cal per 40 min x2. Practice days would be more just with more time riding and what not

God damn I'll never forget for the rest of my life trying to explain this sport to my friends and peers in high school... Same responses every time:

"It's easy, you just gas it and turn it when you need to"

"How can it be one of the most strenuous sports? The bike does everything. its not like you're pedaling"

"You sit down, how can you get tired?"

I gave up explaining it to people Sophomore year.... The good part was there was a good group of us that DID ride. About 20-25 kids. We'd rent out LACR (already miss that track...) a couple days a year so we could have it to ourselves... usually on someone's birthday.

The question is flawed we don't burn calories at the same rate.
different body types ectomorph, mesomorp etc. have vastly different metbolic rates.and we are not in the same level of conditioning.

Fitness is better measured by heart rate and recovery speed.

Spot on post. Did this same experiment this summer.
Racing is a totally different monster with all the extra variables involved.

You guys are intense with this 185/190 talk. If i'm out on the road and see the 170's i'm getting in trouble.
