How to choose motocross gloves: What's more important than your control over the bike? That starts at the hands. Even more important are the things wrapped around your hands, the gloves. Many just purchase gloves that match the gear they're rocking, instead of hunting down a pair that could actually improve your feel and control, or even offer a bit more protection. Look below for a bit more info on the designs, materials, and price points available.

Glove Materials

For quite a while, motocross gloves were much thicker and more protective, until a recent trend that has led to a series of lightweight and extremely flexible options for those looking at more control and feel. Old school gloves were made of multiple fabrics and sections, with a ton of stitching to hold things together. Advances in fiber and fabric technology has come gloves that are made of fewer sections, meaning less stitching to bind up and bite your fingers and hands. This is accomplished through very flexible materials, that can be stretched and manipulated to fit the form of your hand, while offering a more natural fit and feel.

But for those that still enjoy or look for protection in a glove, the advancements on the lightweight side have helped as well. These gloves have gotten lighter and are using protection materials that are more flexible to move with the motion of you palms and fingers. You'll find different forms of rubber and other variable rate compounds, which soak up impacts and energy placed into your hands. Also, the way they go about adding extra palm padding is easier to grip the bars with. Less stitching and more extrusions of material give the padded feel, but without the feel of seams rolling and biting against your palm during a long moto, which can lead to blisters.

How Much to Spend

Depending upon what quality of materials you're looking to get, most gloves come in between $15 and $40, but there are some very specialized gloves with other features (mostly protection-related) that can reach upwards of $80.

At the low-end of the scale, between $15 and $28, you'll find a very basic glove, basic materials and construction. These gloves typically feature less stretch material and gripper sections, but have more seams then the higher end options. Moving up from above $28 to around $40, you have premium motocross gloves. These feature more stretch panels and materials that allow for less overall sections to the glove pattern, meaning less stitching and seams to irritate your hand. For protection, it adds in materials that are more flexible as well. Also there are multiple venting options for warm weather in this price range, from vented material to laser cut-out sections to keep your hands cool and comfortable. Lastly, at this level are multiple options of closure systems and strapless cuffs to fit your personal needs and style.

Moving above $40 and up to around $80 are very specialized protection gloves, featuring old-school knuckle busters and carbon fiber protection taken from street. Or extremely high-end moto gloves with variable rate materials to soak up impacts while still allowing decent movement of the overall hand. Gloves in this range could be a bit of an acquired taste, either being used for off-road or dual-sport purposes, or a moto guy looking for the most protection out there.‚Äč
