When the skies really opened up between the end of practice, and the start of racing, it wasn't just the riders who were a little bummed. You'll find John Grant hitting the start lever at several nationals a year.

How slippery was it around the track? The Washougal track surface was like ice in places. We saw some spots around the track where even simple grades made it tough for spectators to climb up without sliding back down.
