After qualifying third, Tyler Villopoto could have opted to pick a gate further inside, but he chose the far outside because he could leave it on longer into the first turn, he didn't have to bang bars, and the jump around the first sweeper wasn't as abrupt. It was working for him, as he was second out of the gate.
