It's a bit hard to see here, but the new skid plate is constructed from plastic, rather than aluminum, and features integrated engine guards. Yamaha says that it offers improved protection where it wraps around the frame rails, and doesn't bend like aluminum. It also has less effect on the rigidity of the frame than the old aluminum plate.
