Thor’s Baggett and Durham Handle Elements for Podium Finish in Daytona

The
AMA Supercross Series made its annual stop at the Daytona International
Speedway for the historical Daytona Supercross over the weekend. While
the past few years have been rain-free, the torrential downpour that
seemed to hover steadily over Daytona Beach, Fla. made for an
interesting race on Saturday night.

Monster
Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett and Darryn Durham seemed to
have little trouble with the soupy track, with Baggett earning a
Supercross Lites heat race win. In the main event, both managed minimal
mistakes during the 12-lap race to land the teammates on the podium,
with Baggett in second-place and Durham in third. Thor’s Cole Thompson
also found his way inside the top-10 with a ninth-place finish.

The
Supercross class faced the worst conditions of the night with the heat
races and Supercross Lites main event tearing up the track prior to
their 16-lap main event. Ryan Villopoto had his work cut out for him
after going down in the second turn on the opening lap, using the entire
race to push from 20th to fifth. His Monster Energy Kawasaki teammate
Jake Weimer managed to finish seventh, despite going down with two laps
to go. Thor’s Broc Tickle also handled the conditions well, tying his
best season result with an eighth-place finish, while Brett Metcalfe
rounded out the top-10.

In
addition to the AMA Supercross Series, the Thor amateur racers gathered
at Oak Hill Raceway for the first big amateur national of the season.
Jordon Smith was a standout amongst the Thor riders, taking home one
title in the 250 Intermediate Stock class and two additional podiums in
the 99-250F Schoolboy 12-14 Stock and Modified classes.

Also
putting together a great week was Paul Coates, who finished on the
podium in all three classes he competed in, including a moto win in the
450 4-Stoke Modified Non-Pro class. Justin Hill also grabbed a moto win
in the 450 A Modified class, earning second overall in the class. Other
Thor podium finisher included Carter Halpain, Lance Kobush, Colt
Nichols, and Tanner Stack. The riders hope to pick up where they left
off with the second amateur national of the year starting today at
MillCreek MX Park in Pell City, Ala.
