Terminal Velocity Phoenix Race Report

They say that championships are won on your bad days. Well, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s round-one winner Jake Weimer had a “bad day” at Phoenix, in a lot of respects. Coming into the race in first and second in points, with Weimer and teammate Ryan Morais finishing in those spots at round one, the team set a high standard for itself going into round two.

After winning his Heat race, Weimer grabbed the holeshot and led the main event early, but fell down while leading, rejoining the race in fifth. He passed his way back up through the field, and in the last turn was within striking distance of his teammate Morais for third place, but had to settle for fourth.

“It was going well, and it’s just a bummer,” Weimer said. “It happens, unfortunately. It sucks when you’re leading, and you’re feeling good, and everything’s flowing, and in a split second, you’re down on the ground, picking yourself up. I’m bummed, for sure, but the good thing is that I’m riding really well, and I feel confident, and I’m injury-free and ready to go. It’s still early, and there are a lot more races to go.”

Weimer now trails by two points in the championship chase.

His teammate Morais had a less-spectacular main event, coming through from the tail end of the top five to land third at the finish, just behind second, and just barely in front of his teammate Weimer.

“Tonight was good,” Morais said. “I didn’t do so good in my Heat race – I kind of got tangled up and got fifth, and I had a really far inside gate. I got a good start, and I think I came around like fifth or sixth around the first turn, then I moved into fourth really quick and rode my own race. Unfortunately, I think I was a little too patient and got stuck in their pace, and when I tried going, I couldn’t really go – I tightened up. But I’m happy. Consistency will keep me in the championship, and that’s my ultimate goal, to win a championship this year. Mitch and everyone at Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki gave me this opportunity, and I’m going out there and giving everything I’ve got for these guys. I know it’s my last chance, and that’s what I’m treating it as.”

Morais is third in points going into round three, one point behind his teammate, and three behind the leader.

Joining in with the 45,000-strong crowd were about three-dozen guests of Terminal Velocity Processing, occupying two suites above one of the track’s triple jumps.

“The racing was very good, and we are still in the championship chase,” TVP’s Joe Parsons said. “We at TVP are so excited to see what Anaheim II will bring us. The racing is getting better and better.”

From here, the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki squad heads to Anaheim for round three of the 2009 Lites Western Regional Supercross Championship on January 17th at Angel Stadium.
