Houston - With last weekend off,
Team Dragon Racing Fuels/1-88-KTM PARTS pulled into Houston refreshed with high
expectations for the second Texas race.
As the sky’s parted and the sun began to shine it looked to be a great
day.
After
good qualifying, #64 Taylor Futrell lined up in Heat 1 with a great gate pick on
the inside of the Dog House. When
the gate dropped, Taylor got through the first turn with a good position in the
lead pack. It looked to be a battle as Taylor rounded out the top five. Banging bars and fighting for the
preferred line, Taylor stayed with the lead pack for the first three laps. On the third lap, as they exited the
very technical plateau section a mechanical malfunction with his bike caused Taylor
to crash and he hit the ground hard.
Thanks to Doc Bodnar and the Asterisks Medical Crew, Taylor was assisted
off the track on the cart then headed to their mobile medical center for x-rays
on his ankle. Taylor’s day was
over. Stay tuned for updated information on Taylor.
With
Taylor out for the night due to an ankle injury, the weight of the team was on
#211 Tevin Tapia. Heat 2 was now
the focus. Tevin lined up on the
outside of the Dog House and envisioned his line to the first corner. As the gate dropped, Tevin grabbed a
handful of throttle and filed into the first corner with the lead pack. While banging bars and fighting for the
preferred line Tevin got tangled up and sent off the track with a minor hand
injury. Going through the LCQ was
his only hope for the Main Event.
With
a good gate pick in the LCQ, Tevin was confident and ready. With only 4 laps to get it done, Tevin
had to ride the perfect race. As
the gate dropped, Tevin got a great start and just missed the hole shot by a
tire length. He battled for the
lead with #412 Levi Kilbarger for most of the race but on lap 2 a mishap in the
whoop section allowed #32 Kyle Cunningham to catch up and battle for second. Cunningham
finally took the position and then headed into the lead. With only the top two going to the main
event, Tevin’s focus was now on Kilbarger for the second transfer spot. Tevin caught up and went for it all in
the last turn as he had a good run through the whoops. Kilbarger went high and Tevin shot for
the low line inside but his bike washed out and slid into Kilbarger taking them
both out with no hope for the Main Event.
It was an exciting race for the fans and another lesson learned for the
rookie Tevin Tapia.
With
one race left for the East Coast Lites series, Team Dragon Racing Fuels/1-866
KTM PARTS heads to St. Louis this weekend and looks to finish on a high note
before the much anticipated Motocross season begins.
