The
coolest thing about St. Louis is probably the arch I suppose, one of
these years maybe I’ll climb up in it. Well actually the coolest thing
about St. Louis is the Supercross Track and more importantly the dirt.
I happen to be a big fan of soil and this stuff was stellar. While
traveling to this year’s dealer appearance autograph signing at Big St.
Charles Motorsports, I really took notice to all the abandoned
bulidings. Big brick buildings with windows boarded up and some even
missing their roofs. Someone told me that St. Louis has the most crime
in the US and 90% of that crime is in this one area. Probably not a
good place to break down or go for a little hike. Even just walking
from one hotel to another downtown after the race I had a couple
sketchy moments. Guess I just didn’t fit in down there….
The
Rockstar Makita Suzuki team has been very fortunate this year able to
celebrate 11 podiums thus far in the Supercross Season. This week was
no different as Ryan Dungey put himself on the box once again. This
time he recorded another 2nd place finish as the checkers waved. He
showed a sign of maturity to me in the main event as he was following
James Stewart. James jumped what was a very gnarly triple triple
section before the finish line and Ryan followed suit right behind him.
Dungey had not done this all day, and I’m not sure anyone had but it
proved to be very important. It’s pretty nerve racking to jump
something during a race for the first time but he did it perfect. In
fact as technical as the tripling through the section was, not only was
it very much faster, but almost safer. Doubling through sent several
riders over the bars or swapping because of the weird lip and landing
transitions. If Ryan didn’t dial that section in the main event, he
probably would not have finished 2nd and would not have closed the
points gap between him and Ryan Villopoto for the Championship points
lead. With only 3 rounds to go now, Dungey is only five points behind.
He may defend his title with another win just yet.
Valli
Motorsports Rockstar Yamaha’s Austin Stroupe is really starting to
consistently put himself in the top ten in the Premiere Class main
events each week now. Stroupe continues to improve on things at every
race. The number 74 proved he has the speed this week when he qualified
with the third fastest lap time of the day in practice. Now he just
needs to stay healthy, continue to better his fitness and put in 20
laps at that pace and he may not just jump into the the top five but
may even find himself on the podium. Seems like a long shot now to many
I’m sure but I have faith in Austin, and if he continues to travel down
the right path……don’t count Stroupy out.
Hunter
Hewitt put together yet another great ride, and another top ten in the
lites main event. This time however his 7th place finish also popped
him into tenth overall for the series sitting just two points out of
9th with one race to go in the East. Hunter is doing everything right
at this point. He wants only one thing and that is to race his
dirtbike. He is as committed as any motocross racer can possibly be
right now. He’s training hard, riding hard, eating right and even going
to bed early everyday. Hewitt doesn’t want to be a top ten guy however,
he wants to be top five at least while being consistently on the podium
and battling for race wins. If Hunter can find a couple more things to
change for the better he has the talent to do so. He has two weeks to
regroup before Vegas and try for his season long goal of top 5……for now.
