Redux Beverages/Brawndo Honda Race Update presented by Rockwell Watches

August 31, 2008

Team Redux Beverages/Brawndo Honda rolled into the final round of the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross National Series with high hopes. The roster was full, with “Brawndo” Bob Kiniry representing in the “Lites” division, and both “Redux” Ryan Clark and rookie Ben Evans doing the honors in the 450cc Motocross division. The weather was fine and the stage was set for a showdown in Steel City.

Leading the charge was “Brawndo” Bob Kiniry, hitting the track with his usual intensity and looking like was literally riding the wheels off his lightning quick 2008 Honda CRF 250R. Bob has been showing a double dose of speed lately, but he was looking to match that with the consistency needed to post a solid overall finish.

Bob’s first moto start was lackluster, leaving him well out of the top twenty on the opening lap. He pushed it to the limit, passing several riders in one fell swoop. Quicker than you could say “it’s got what plants crave”, Bob was inside the top twenty and looking strong. Amazingly, he continue to slice his way toward the front of the pack until the final lap, landing himself with a 12th place finish.

The second moto was looking fine for one last great moto. Bob rocketed his JR Boyd-tuned Honda rocket ship to a top five start and was jockeying for every inch he could get. About four turns into the race, his moto came to an abrupt halt. He was fourth at the time, and Brett Metcalfe lost traction in the turn, causing a multiple rider pileup that also claimed “Lites” champion Ryan Villopoto. Thus would put a premature end to Bob’s final moto of the year. Despite his second moto mishap, Bob would still manage 18th overall on the day, ending his season in a tie for 20th in the series point standings.

Ben Evans was well rested and ready to try his hand yet again at professional racings. His lap times were great, and to say that he was excited to be there would be the understatement of the year.

Ben had a great start in the first moto, and was running comfortably inside the top fifteen for most of the moto. Just after halfway, Ben was forced to ditch his goggles as he had sweat so much it was now affecting his vision. He gutted out the last fifteen minutes to earn his first national point, finishing 20th place on the moto.

The second moto didn’t get off to a great start, as Ben was caught up in a first turn crash. He remounted in last and began a steady climb through the pack. On the second lap, he had a minor disruption when he slid out in a slick corner. He quickly remounted and picked up where he had left off, picking off one rider at a time. At the finish, he had made it all the way to 21st position, one position shy of earning another national point.

“Redux” Ryan Clark was looking for a strong finish to a frustrating season. He continued to struggle with his qualifying lap times, but was looking forward to getting the race underway and picking up his pace.

The first moto was not the redemption he was looking for, as he was involved in a first turn crash and would have to battle back from 39th position. He was moving through the pack well, but it all ended a few laps into the moto when Canadian rider Colten Faccioti took them both out with a more than questionable pass attempt. Upon remounting, he got back up to speed but was too far back to make an impact and finished in 31st.

The second moto was looking bright, as his start was much better and he was quickly getting up to speed. On the second lap, things came to a disastrous halt. On the tricky uphill triple/double section, Ryan was hot on the heels of fellow Honda pilot Jake Marsack. Jake mistakenly over-jumped the triple, causing his foot to come off the peg. He crashed violently over the double, and his bike somehow rebounded straight up in the air and over into Ryan’s line. The rider-less bike knocked Ryan off his machine and crashing to the ground. Ryan received only minor injuries, but Jake Marsack was brought to the hospital for additional treatment. This was not the finish Ryan was looking for, but fortunately he emerged relatively uninjured. To check out the crash yourself, follow this youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJzCC300Tc8

Where do we go from here? The building of next year’s program is already well underway, and everything is in line to put forth the best lineup since the formation of the program back in 2002. Ben Evans will be racing around the Northwest in the months to come, and doing much preparation for his initial foray into Supercross on January 3rd, 2009. Bob Kiniry will be doing several races abroad to keep sharp and cash in on the very lucrative European Supercross Championships. Ryan Clark will be defending his victory at last year’s Montreal Supercross, as well as competing in the US Open and other select events. Mostly, though, the team will be recovering and rebuilding for an even better 2009. Thanks to all for your support and for making the dream of Team Solitaire/MB1 Racing a reality!
