Redux Beverages/Brawndo Honda Event Update Presented by Kingdom Crown—Mt. Morris, PA

June 15th, 2008

Round four of the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross National Series lay siege to the once quiet town of Mt. Morris, PA for a battle of epic proportions.  Team Redux Beverages/Brawndo Honda had an impressive front line, with troops in place and ready for battle on Sunday afternoon.

“Brawndo” Bob Kiniry continued to impress, smashing his way to a top ten qualification time and readying himself for a shot at greatness during the two 30-minute-plus-two-lap motos.

When the gate dropped on moto one, Bob burst into the top fifteen and went to work.  For the entire moto, he was locked in battle with the opposition forces.  After moving into the top ten, Bob has a brief miscue that lost him several positions.  Never one to settle, he regrouped, re-passed and re-entered the 12th position by moto end.  Thus, he was rewarded with nine series points for his efforts.

The second moto began much the same as the first.  Bob was engaged in a six or seven rider dogfight for the majority of the moto, biting and clawing his way forward at every opportunity.  On the final lap, it looked like he would be able to moved into the top ten, but a lapped rider interfered and he lost precious ground that he was unable to recover.  Bob finished it out in 11th, and accrued ten additional series points toward the championship.  His 12/11 moto tally awarded him with 11th overall for the day.

“Redux” Ryan Clark was looking to get back on track after his troubles in Texas.  He stepped up in the timed qualification session and was rewarded with a much improved gate position from the previous events.

Ryan took full advantage of his great start gate and rocketed off the line in third position, just behind Mike Alessi and James Stewart.  He held third for a lap, but relinquished positions to Tim Ferry, and the Honda duo of Millsaps and Short on lap two.  Things were looking good for a great moto finish, but unfortunately Ryan would tweak his right ankle in a deep rut just prior to the halfway point of the moto.  The rest of the moto was survival, and he was able to hold on to eleventh place despite the injury.

Ryan iced his ankle and did some therapy between motos, thanks to Dr. Steve Navarro.  After a few pain killers and a can of Brawndo, it looked likely that he would be on the gate for moto two.  Trouble struck again, this time in the discovery of a hole in the bottom of the engine cases just minutes before the start of the second moto.  Mark and the mechanics (Mark Farabaugh, Jesse Black, Arthur Clinton and JR Boyd) scurried about, looking for a quick fix as there  was no time for an engine swap.  Finally, West Virginia native Jesse Black harnessed his hillbilly skills to and came up with the idea to use a piece of cork to fill the hole.  He drilled the hole out slightly and sculpted the cork to just the right proportions.  Once in place, he wedged the handle of a small wire brush in between the frame rails to hold the plug in place.  Skeptical, Ryan grabbed his bike and rode to the line wondering how long it would hold.  Low and behold, the contraption lasted the entire moto!  Ryan had missed his gate pick due to his tardiness, so he ended up far outside and ultimately in the first turn carnage.  From there, he would only muster 24th place for the moto, resulting in no points.   Ryan’s 11/24 moto score would secure 16th place overall for the event.

The other Ryan, Ryan Grantom, had a breakthrough weekend in Pennsylvania.  His first moto was solid, resulting in 25th place, but the second moto resulted in the best outdoor ride of his young professional career.  Ryan worked up from a mediocre start into the top twenty, finishing 18th place and earning his very first professional points (awarded to the top twenty riders in each moto).  Grantom’s 25/18 score was good enough for 22nd overall at Mt. Morris.

It was an extremely successful weekend for Team Redux Beverages/Brawndo Honda.  The crowd turnout was excellent despite an enormous amount of rain on Saturday.  The crew will have next weekend off before returning to the action on Saturday, June 28th near Denver, CO.
