Pirelli Sweeps the Podium at Pingkal Pinang for the Motocross Grand Prix of Indonesia

Jeffrey Herlings Returns from Injury to Win the MXGP Class and Maintains Lead in the Championship. Calvin Vlaanderen Earns First Career Victory in MX2, While Pauls Jonass Keeps the Red Plate

PANGKAL PINANG, Indonesia (July 2, 2018) – The twelfth round of the 2018 FIM World Motocross Championship, the Grand Prix of Indonesia, was hosted, for the second year in a row by the Pangkal Pinang circuit. The rains that struck the area during the weekend made the Indonesian track technical and tricky, but the Pirelli-equipped riders were able to shine thanks to the excellent SCORPION™ MX Soft rear - a essential choice for conditions involving mud and ruts - and to the SCORPION™ MX32™ Mid Soft front. These tires allowed the Italian brand to dominate podiums in both classes.

After missing Ottobiano due to a broken collarbone, Jeffrey Herlings won the MXGP class after a great battle with Antonio Cairoli. Although rusty and missing bike time after the operation only 17 days beforehand, Jeffrey won the qualifying heat and second race to grab his ninth victory of the season. Cairoli finished with the same points as the Dutchman, but had to settle as runner-up after finishing second to the Dutchman in the second moto. The gap between Herlings and Cairoli in the championship standings remains unchanged at 12 points. Romain Febvre was third in Indonesia ahead of Tim Gajser.

Calvin Vlaanderen won the MX2 class for his very first overall GP success. The South African showed good speed across the Indonesian track by taking 3rd place in the first race and through winning the second by a large margin. Thomas Covington, winner of race 1, finished as runner-up on the day. Jorge Prado, third overall, has gnawed another two points from championship leader Pauls Jonass, who took fifth place at Pangkal Pinang despite some minor mistakes during the last race.

Next weekend the riders will tackle the second Indonesian race of the season. The Grand Prix of Asia will be hosted by a brand new track at Semarang, the great port city located on the northern shore of Java island.
