Pirelli Racers Storm Bike Week at Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA (USA) March 6, 2016 – The ninth round of the 2016 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, was held Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway. Temperatures hovered in the low 70’s throughout the afternoon, with scattered clouds littering the mostly-sunny blue skies. A unique track layout was in store for the riders in attendance, ultimately survival of the fittest would play a key factor.

BTO Sports/WPS/KTM’s Davi Millsaps launched out of the gate to a third place start in 450SX Class Heat 1. He kept within striking distance of the leaders, before eventually settling into third and earning a direct transfer to the Main Event.

Justin Brayton powered his BTO Sports/WPS/KTM to a second place finish in 450SX Semi 1, followed by Autotrader/Monster Energy/Yamaha’s Weston Peick who charged to fifth place at the finish.

Autotrader/Monster Energy/Yamaha’s Phil Nicoletti put in an impressive ride in 450SX Semi 2, earning his first Semi victory of the season. Motorcycle Superstore Suzuki’s Kyle Cunningham scored the 450SX LCQ win and TPJ Racing rider Nick Schmidt claimed the fourth and final transfer spot.

In the 450SX Main Event, Brayton found himself off to an uncharacteristic start as he was buried deep in the field. He began his march through the talented lineup of riders and crossed the checkered flag in ninth position.

Cunningham started the 20-lap Main Event in dead last, however, he battled hard the entire race to finish in 15th. A bobble early in the race left Peick with his work cut out as he finished in 18th, just ahead of Millsaps in 19th who suffered a crash on lap-18 while running in seventh place.

Privateer Schmidt rounded out the top-20, closely followed by Pirelli teammate Nicoletti who rode well for the first half of the race until a mistake forced him to settle in 21st.

MAD Racing/Dirt Candy Graphics/Suzuki’s Matt Bisceglia started just inside of the top-10 in 250SX Heat 1. He used consistency throughout the six-lap qualifier to finish in seventh place and transfer directly to the Main Event. Motorcycle Superstore Suzuki’s Jimmy Albertson secured his spot in the Main Event with a second place finish in the 250SX LCQ.

The Eastern Regional 250SX Main Event watched Bisceglia take advantage of his SCORPION™ MX tires as he started in fifth place. He battled for position with the front-runners before misfortune struck on lap-9, causing him to lose several spots en route to a 19th place finish. Albertson was hampered by a bad start in the opening laps, but he charged all the way until the checkered flag to grab 16th.

The tenth round of Monster Energy Supercross takes place next Saturday, March 12th from the legendary Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada.
