Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Stewart Takes Second

BUDDS CREEK, Md. (June 17, 2007) – Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto captured the win in the AMA Motocross Lites class at the fourth round of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship, while teammate Ben Townley took second.  Monster Energy Kawasaki rider James Stewart earned the runner-up position in the AMA Motocross division.

In the AMA Motocross Lites division at Budds Creek Motocross Park, defending champion Villopoto earned his first overall victory of the 2007 season. He put in two dominating rides on his Kawasaki KX™250F and won both motos.

“On Saturday, I rode good, felt good and had the fastest lap time,” said Villopoto. “Then on Sunday, I had the fastest time again. Both days just went really well. It seemed like I had either been struggling on Saturday or Sunday the past three races, but this weekend went perfect.”

He added, “I think getting out of California this past week was really good for me, because I got to ride some different tracks and different dirt.”

Townley rode two strong motos, but was unable to catch Villopoto. He finished out the weekend with second place overall (2-2).

“I think Ryan had an unreal day today,” said Townley. “In the second moto, I got a good start right behind Ryan and I thought, ‘it’s time to go with him.’ I tried, but I just couldn’t do it. He rode exceptional.”

With this weekends win, Villopoto boosted his points lead in the AMA Motocross Lites standings to 14 points over Townley.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate Chris Gosselaar, who was making his return to the outdoor series in Budds Creek after a bad crash in Hangtown, rode to a solid 11th place overall.

In the AMA Motocross class, Stewart put his Kawasaki KX™450F atop the podium with an impressive first moto win. In moto two, he got a great start and, after a hard fought battle with Ricky Carmichael, took home the runner-up position which earned him second overall for the weekend.

“I thought I rode really well in the first moto,” said Stewart. “I set a good pace and was able to pull off the win which felt really good. But in the second moto, I was having some stomach issues on the gate and felt like I was going to puke. I just didn’t have the energy in the second moto, but I was glad I was at least able to lead for about 25 minutes.”

“I felt like today was our chance. I thought we could win today, but unfortunately we let it slip though our hands.”

Teammate Timmy Ferry, who finished fourth in the first moto, was not as fortunate in the second moto as a first turn crash put him in 40th place. After Ferry finally remounted, he rode a ride of sheer determination and came across the finish line in 8th position, earning him fifth place overall for the weekend.

MotoSport Kawasaki's Steve Boniface put in a solid ninth-place overall finish in the AMA Motocross Lites class while teammate Bobby Kiniry finished a slot behind in the 10th position. Kyle Chisholm and Matt Boni finished in the 14th and 22nd positions, respectively.

The teams head to Buchanan, Mich., on June 30-July 1 for the Monster Energy/Kawasaki RedBud National, the fifth round of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship.
