For more than four decades, the U.S. National Speedway Championship has served as the most significant event for speedway motorcycle racing in North America. With a permanent home at the most renowned facility in the country, the magnitude of this race and the influence of this venue on the sport can be felt all over the world. In just a handful of days, hundreds of riders will take their shot at national glory in one of the most captivating forms of racing on the planet and with so much prestige on the line this weekend, Monster Energy simply had to be a part of it.

“Speedway is arguably the most iconic form of two-wheeled racing, dating all the way back to the 1920’s,” said Bruce Stjernstrom, Vice President of Sports Marketing for Monster Energy. “With the richest tradition of the sport right here in Southern California at Costa Mesa Speedway, this event is definitely the perfect fit for Monster Energy. Supporting all forms of motorsports is in our heritage as a brand and the U.S. National Speedway Championship falls right in line with that legacy.”

Costa Mesa Speedway was the birthplace of speedway motorcycle racing in the U.S., opening its doors in 1968 with its very first event. Over the last 44 years, the speedway has been the foundation for the sport in America thanks in large part to the U.S. National Speedway Championship, which has called Costa Mesa home since the 1969 season. With its extremely loyal fan base and family-friendly atmosphere, the track has introduced speedway racing into the lives of thousands of men, women and children. With Monster Energy’s support of the event, that number is sure to grow even more on Saturday night.

“The resources that Monster Energy brings to the U.S. National Speedway Championship are unmatched,” said Brad Oxley, owner of Costa Mesa Speedway. “The brand is synonymous with action sports and motorsports, and their support has helped generate a lot of buzz for this year’s event. So much so that it has allowed us to have our largest purse in 30 years, which is surely going to bring us the biggest and most competitive group of riders we’ve seen in a long time.”

The field of competitors ready to throw it sideways on Saturday night is led by Billy “the Kid” Janniro, the four-time U.S. National Speedway Champion who is looking to become just the second rider in history to claim three consecutive titles. However, a star-studded lineup of former champions is ready to end his reign, most notably Billy “the Bullet” Hamill.

Hamill is a Monster Energy athlete who hails from Southern California and over the course of his 27-year professional career, has amassed one of the most impressive racing résumés in speedway history. Aside from being a two-time U.S. National Speedway Championship winner (2002, 2007) and a five-time American Speedway Champion (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007), Hamill also holds the coveted distinction of being one of just five American riders to ever win the Speedway World Championship, back in 1996.

In addition to Hamill, the list of invited contenders includes former U.S. National Speedway Championship winners Charlie “the Edge” Venegas, Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz, and “Flyin” Mike Faria, as well as longtime Costa Mesa Speedway veterans like Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell. As a result, this collection of riders will make the 44thU.S. National Speedway Championship more wide open than it’s ever been before.
