Monster Energy Kawasaki's Ferry Earns Top 10 in Supercross Return

Irvine, Calif. (March 31, 2008) – In his return after missing the last three events, Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Timmy Ferry finished seventh at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada. His teammate Travis Preston finished 14th.

Ferry rode a tenacious race during the main event after getting a slow start out of the gate. In typical Ferry fashion he picked his way through the field running as high as sixth before crossing the finish line in seventh.

“My speed isn’t too far off from before,” said Ferry. “I need to work on my rhythm and my endurance. Not racing for a month is kind of tough on you. I came out with good points and I think it was a good ride. I didn’t get a good start and that hurt me but I’m glad to be racing.”

Back On Track

After missing the last three races, Ferry came back strong to lead the final practice session before the evening program. Ferry rode a lap of 58.934 seconds to claim the first gate pick in his heat race. Though he helped design the track, it was still new to him as it was changed throughout the day because of the soft dirt.

“It felt good to be the fastest in practice,” said Ferry. “You never know how you’ll feel and you have soreness here and there. I felt pretty good. I wasn’t 100%, but this will help me get better quicker and get back in the groove of racing.”

Chasing the Track

The soft dirt at the Rogers Centre caused headaches all night. Between all of the sessions the Dirt Wurx crew worked overtime to rebuild sections of the track to keep the action exciting.

“I don’t want my name attached to that track whatsoever,” said Ferry, who helped design the layout. “The dirt was really, really bad this year. They worked on it all night, that’s the most I’ve ever seen them work on a track. I give them credit for that. It’s just when the dirt’s that wet when you bring it in there’s not much you can do with it. It was a tough track, probably the toughest supercross I’ve raced in a long time.”

Overcoming

Ferry faced long odds during the Toronto event. Not only was he coming back after a month away from the races, he also was battling a cold.

“It seemed like as soon as I got out of the hospital, like two days later, I got sick with a cold that’s been lingering until now,” said Ferry. “That didn’t help too much. I had a few things stacked against me tonight.”

Running Flat Out

Preston got out of the starting gate well, but on the first lap he went off the track and fell to the back of the field. In just a few laps, he rode fast enough to make up the half-track gap and worked his way up to the top ten. Preston continued to ride all out to finish 14th.

“I felt good,” said Preston. “I hung it out the most I have this year. I could actually last the whole race, even though I crashed four times. I was riding well and didn’t hold anything back. This is the first race I could do that. I think when we get to a normal track with normal dirt we will be okay.”

Track Conditions

Throughout the main event Preston adapted to the changing track conditions and rode some of his fastest laps of the night.

“It was slippery and you had to ride cautious, but I wasn’t riding very cautious tonight,” said Preston. “I was just going for it. It was weird. It was really sandy, then you would get to a part that was really hard and slippery. It was the strangest track I’ve ever seen. There were really weird conditions out there. We’ve had a lot of odd races this year. Daytona was weird and so was this one.”
