Makeham crowned Under 19s Australian Supercross Champion for KTM

Victorian teenager Kale Makeham wrapped up the Under 19s category of the Australian Supercross Championships with a thrilling victory at Newcastle’s finale round of the 2012 season on Saturday, 17 November.

The KTM privateer make it back-to-back wins on his KTM 250 SX after picking up victory at Toowoomba a week earlier, edging his way to the championship win by a single point in a relentless performance. Choice Motorsports KTM’s Dylan Long finished second in Newcastle riding the 250 SX-F, making it a one-two for the Austrian manufacturer.

“Coming into the last round I knew there was a chance at the championship, but all I was focused on was winning back-to-back races and letting the rest play out, which paid off,” Makeham said. “The round went perfectly for me, I was able to grab both holeshots and most importantly achieve my goal of winning a championship.

“There’s no other feeling like it and now I’ve tasted success I’m hungry for more – I can’t wait for 2013 and the years to come. I can’t thank KTM Australia enough for their support this year, along with my personal sponsors AJ’s Motorcycles, Tunetech Suspension, FOX, LKI, The Collective. Skullcandy, Oakley and Pod MX.”

JDR KTM Factory Racing’s Ryan Marmont sealed second in the SX-Lites category for the year, finishing fourth at the finale aboard the 250 SX-F. Coming back from an injury-ruled outdoor campaign, Marmont was happy to score the number two plate and now has his sights set on a successful 2013 season.

“I had such a bad motocross season, so it was good to turn my year around in supercross,” the Wollongong resident explained. “It is a good feeling to be first Aussie in the championship and second overall, I feel like that’s where I deserve to be and my injuries are all healed up. Now that I’m injury free I know I can have a strong season next year and I look forward to that.”

KTM also claimed the Junior Lites title at Newcastle thanks to SS Racing rider Aaron Tanti, who captured his third main event victory in four attempts at Newcastle on Saturday evening. Brock McLeary, Dylan Heaton and Nathan Denny made it four KTMs in the top five, filling positions three through five respectively.
