METCALFE WINS, MARTIN PODIUMS FOR PRO TAPER

Corona, CA – Round ten of the twelve stop 2011 Lucas Oil AMA Motocross
Championship weathered the storm Saturday at the infamous Moto X 338
facility in Massachusetts. Despite the treacherous conditions Pro Taper
riders Brett Metcalfe and Alex Martin both notched career firsts this
weekend.  Metcalfe grabbed his first AMA National win, while Martin
earned his first podium finish since making the jump to professional
racing.

With hurricane Irene threatening all day, the track conditions were
exceptionally challenging at the already difficult sand circuit.
Metcalfe stayed consistent throughout the two 30-minute motos and used
three-two moto scores to put himself on the top step of the podium at
day’s end.  The victory was sweet redemption for Brett, who saw a
Southwick win slip through his finger tips when he ran out of fuel on
the last lap one year ago.  This win has been a long time coming for the
likeable Aussie.  "I'm a winner now," exclaimed Metcalfe. "This career
has been a roller coaster. After everything I've been through, to
finally get a win after eight years just feels good. The first moto was
the worst I've ever rode at Southwick, but I still got third. We
prepared my bike for the mud in the second moto and it rode like butter.
It was perfect. I knew I had to beat Villopoto for the overall. I saw
him ahead of me, dug deep, and passed him."

Teammate Ryan Dungey was not as fortunate.  Dungey convincingly won moto
one, but his luck changed rather quickly.  After a mechanical
malfunction caused Dungey to miss the start of moto two, he turned in
one of the most inspiring rides in moto history.  Ryan fought, clawed
and muscled his way from a huge deficit to salvage seventh place and
third overall for the day.  The ride saved Ryan’s championship hopes, as
he sits a mere eight points back with four motos to go in the series.

Probably the biggest surprise in the wet Moto X 338 sand was Eleven10
Mods Honda rider Alex Martin leading the opening laps of the second 250
moto.  Martin admittedly got nervous while up front and eventually
surrendered the lead to veteran Tyla Rattray.  After a few laps Alex
regrouped and rallied back to hang on to third place in the moto.
Combined with a tenth in moto one, the privateer rider finished out
fourth overall on the day – also a career best for the Millville, MN
native.

The series now heads to Steel City raceway just outside of Pittsburgh,
PA on Saturday, September 3rd. Be sure to tune in to @ProTaper on

nationals.
