Laier Takes Victory at Opening Day of Swedish Round

UDDEVALLA (SWEDEN), 4 July 2009 – The start to the penultimate round of the FIM WMX series gave Laier another victory as the current Championship leader increased her advantage over Papenmeier, fifth today.

As defending Champion Lancelot is out with an injured right shoulder, which will be operated next Tuesday and will require a four month recovery period, series leader Laier missed the pole which was taken by German compatriot Papenmeier. Kane was second fastest ahead of Franke, Laier and home rider Mann completing the top five.

When the gate of the first heat dropped Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Laier took the group into turn one, then she pulled away to take a dominant victory.

As Laier remained a distant first for the whole moto, Kane, Franke, Papenmeier and Mann battled tooth and nail for the runner up spot. Kane held the second place until half race distance but Franke moved past at lap seven.

The Kawasaki Elf Pfeil rider ended runner up to Laier while MVR-D Suzuki’s Kane settled for third ahead of home rider Mann.

It was a difficult heat for Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2’s Papenmeier who tangled up with another rider and crashed when she was battling for the top three. After the crash Papenmeier recovered from the bottom of the top ten up to fifth.

Other Swedish Romlin rode a strong comeback race finishing seventh.

A crash with only three laps to go saw Veenstra –virtually fifth- pull out of the heat with a painful twisted knee.

The final heat will take place tomorrow morning.
