Kawasaki Riders Stewart and Villopoto Set Fastest Lap Times For Opening Day at Glen Helen

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (May 25, 2008) – After months of anticipation, the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship Presented by FMF officially kicked off on Saturday, May 24 at the 13th Annual Giant RV AMA Motocross National presented by Yamaha at Glen Helen Raceway Park. An opening day of practice and qualifying concluded with two familiar names atop the leaderboard. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart set fastest time in the Motocross Class, returning to action after a four month hiatus due to injury, while defending champion Ryan Villopoto topped the charts in the Motocross Lites Class aboard his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki.

After two days of torrential rain, the skies held off, creating nearly perfect track conditions for the day’s events. After a flurry of activity throughout the early afternoon hours, Stewart and Villopoto staked their claim as the riders to beat on Sunday. While the weather still holds a slight chance of precipitation for Sunday’s finals, the conditions should be ideal for racing, setting the stage for an outstanding opening round. The gates drop promptly at 1 p.m.
