Italy Looks Forward to Hosting 63rd edition of Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations

FUNCHAL (PORTUGAL), 14 July 2009 – An exciting 63rd edition of the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations is due to take place at the Autodromo Daniel Bonara in Franciacorta, Italy, on October 4.

After visiting several other countries worldwide, the last of which was Great Britain last year with Donington Park, the event will come back to Italy where it was last held in 1986 at Maggiora. Back then team USA (David Bailey, Rick Johnson, Johnny O’Mara) won the sixth of their current 19 Chamberlain Trophies, taking what is described by many as their most spectacular win – the trio dominated all three heats ahead of the rest of the world.

The podium was completed by Great Britain (Dave Thorpe, Jeremy Whatley, Rob Herring) in second and Italy (Michele Rinaldi, Corrado Maddii, Massimo Contini) in third.

Team USA’s success was the sixth of a 13 event winning streak which was interrupted only in 1994 by Team Great Britain, composed at that time by Kurt Nicoll, Rob Herring and Paul Malin.

After USA, Great Britain is the second winningest country in the event which they have won 16 times, the last of which was actually 1994, while Belgium follows with 14 wins.

The event in Franciacorta will place Team Italy in front of their home fans hoping the squad can take their third Chamberlain Trophy after their last in 2002, when the team was made up by Andrea Bartolini (the current Team Manager of Italy), Alessio Chiodi, Alex Puzar.

With the Autodromo Daniel Bonara being a well established road racing facility in Italy with a strong international appeal as well, the motocross course is to be built in a dedicated area of the complex offering lots of good working facilities to the spectators.

The event, whose title sponsor is Red Bull since 2007, sees the cooperation of Youthstream, the FIM, the FMI, Italian Motocross and SuperMoto GP’s local organizer DBO and all the local municipalities.

The press conference at the end of last year’s Red Bull FIM MXoN

The Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations is one of the greatest events in the planet as the quote from three time MXoN winner with Team USA Ricky Carmichael can confirm: “Motocross of Nations is the greatest Motocross race in the World where every top rider dreams to win. When I was 17 this race was all I could think of: I have always wanted to race this event!”. Since Ricky Carmichael’s last appearance at the Red Bull FIM MXoN in 2007 at Budds Creek, the trophy for the youngest and best placed rider in the final of every Motocross of Nations –established in 2007- is named after him.

The Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations, which last year was entered by 35 Nations, is the peak of the FIM Motocross World Championship season, having had one billion TV viewers, 2209 hours of TV broadcast spread in more than 130 countries worldwide last year.
