GLMX Contingency Races Begin This Weekend @ Big Air In Newaygo, MI

Excellent vibe, according to Big Air’s Mark Powers, surrounds the wrap up of the GLMX Michigan Mafia Championship series

BUCHANAN, Mich., (June 17, 2009) - Great Lakes Motocross (GLMX) kicks off its high-paying contingency races this weekend with the opening of the 2009 GLMX Michigan Mafia Championship series’ factory contingency races at Newaygo’s (Mich.) Big Air Motocross.

With the Michigan Mafia Championship series opening this past April, Big Air’s events this weekend mark the the first of seven major MX industry factory contingency races between now and August, with Big Air headlining a list of premier Michigan-based Great Lakes tracks that make up the Michigan Mafia Championship series.

“This should be a really, really big weekend for us,” said Big Air’s Mark Powers, who co-owns the mid-Michigan track with his brother, Matt. “The vibe’s been great. At our last two weekend events we were able to bring in some solid numbers. And everybody was talking about the start of the Michigan Mafia contingency events.”

Powers said that since taking over Big Air’s track in 2004, he and Matt have continued to truck in tons of sand to mix with the clay-based track in order to give GLMX racers the optimal race surface for this weekend’s Michigan Mafia Championship contingency opener. “We chiseled in the sand to the clay and the feedback’s been great,” said Powers. “The rain this week will be helpful in giving racers pursuing Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda contingency dollars - an excellent racing surface that’ll run fast and rut up well.”

Racers expected to contest the new GLMX series contingency opener include Flint-based pro Josh Woods, veteran great John Drury, top 68/85cc racer Ashton Hayes and local speedster Jacob Williamson.

Big Air’s gates open on Friday, June 19th, with registration taking place that evening and at 7 a.m. on Saturday. Racers are reminded there’s racing on both Saturday, June 20th, as well as Sunday, June 21st. And again, cash contingency prizes are up for grabs on Sunday by Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda for the GLMX Michigan Mafia Championship series at Big Air.
