FIM Women's Motocross World Cup Upgraded to World Championship

FUNCHAL, 24 October 2007- Responding to the quick development of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Cup, FIM Promoter Youthstream is proud to announce that the event has just been promoted to the status of World Championship, being called FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship.

2008 will see the first edition of this brand new World Championship, which will have a total of five rounds, to be held together with the MX1/MX2 Grand Prix’s:

  • 11 May, Italy, Mantova
  • 18 May, Bulgaria, Sevlievo
  • 15 June, France, St. Jean D’Angely
  • 29 June, Germany, Teutschenthal
  • 7 September, Benelux, Lierop

The World Cup has increased on its popularity and on its level, and now has all the requirements to equal a World Championship.

Manufacturers such as KTM and Kawasaki are involved in the series, with KTM supporting Steffi Laier through KTM Germany, and Kawasaki supporting reigning Champion Katherine Prumm and Livia Lancelot, through the teams Molson and GPKR respectively.

The FIM Women’s Motocross World Cup started in 2005, and the first winner was German Stephanie Laier. Laier handed the number one to Kiwi Katherine Prumm in 2006, and the Molson Kawasaki rider retained the crown also in 2007, when Kawasaki fellow rider Livia Lancelot eventually ended second, after finishing the previous two seasons in third place. 2007 discovered a handful of new talents, such as first round winner Larissa Papenmeier from Germany, and compatriot Maria Franke, who ended the season with a brilliant third place.

“We thank FIM for upgrading the FIM Motocross Women World Cup to the FIM Motocross Women World Championship. Over the last three years the women have shown their high level as athletes, their professionalism and their strong competitiveness,” Mr. Giuseppe Luongo, President of Youthstream, said. “Following the request from the women riders, the teams participating and the close work with the CMS we have arrived now to build up the Women World Championship, our goal is to have five events in 2008 and to 8 - 10 events by 2010.  We believe this will open a complete new market for Motocross and we think this will bring our sport to many women’s TV programs and magazines, it will also help to involve new sponsors linked to the women’s world; such as fashion, cosmetics, etc.  We want to thank Dr. Wolfgang Srb and Mrs. Beaulah Schoeman for their never ending support in developing this Championship.  We also want to thank the 2006 and 2007 FIM Women World Cup winner Katherine Prumm as a great ambassador for the future Women World Championship.”

“I am very happy that the FIM General Assembly has accepted the proposal to upgrade the FIM Women´s Motocross World Cup to a World Championship", said Dr. Wolfgang Srb, President of the Motocross Commission of the FIM. "Youthstream and the various organisers have worked very hard in these past years to promote the Championship. The women have shown their excellent riding skills and talent. The CMS/FIM is looking forward to a great competition in the years to come.”
