Dragon Racing Fuels Race Report – Steel City

Delmont, PA
– Round 11
of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship series proved to be a
bitter sweet weekend for the Dragon Racing Fuels/1-866-KTM-PART team.
As great weather conditions prevailed on race day, the hopes were high
as the team fired up their KTM 250’s.

#185 Killy Rusk and #244 Ryan Zimmer had great qualifying
practices and both were ready to get racing. As the gate dropped for
moto one, both riders jumped out with the lead pack. Zimmer pushed his
way just outside of the top 10 and Rusk was following his lead. As the
bar banging continued for the first lap, a couple of miscues pushed
both Zimmer and Rusk back a few spots. As they settled in for the moto,
Zimmer was racing at a comfortable pace holding the 15th
position while Rusk was setting his sights on moving forward. In lap
three, Rusk and Zimmer were battling for the 15th spot when Rusk got
into Zimmer’s back tire and sent them both to the ground. Rusk
remounted quickly while Zimmer struggled to get his bike started. After
losing several positions, Zimmer had his work cut out for him as he
dropped towards the back of the pack. With three laps to go, Rusk was
in the 17th position when he over-revved his bike and caused
back tire to slide out going into the triple jump. That miscued his
approach sending both he and his bike into opposite directions off the
jump. Rusk came down hard and his race was over. Zimmer continued to
battle and finished moto one in 27th.

Thanks to the Asterisks Medical Crew, they got Killy back to the
mobile medical center where it was revealed that Killy had broken his
left radius (forearm).  Stay tuned for updates on #185 Killy Rusk.

In moto two, with the weight of the team now on the shoulders of
the rookie Ryan Zimmer, he was ready to prove he has what it takes to
compete at this level. Zimmer got a solid start as the gate dropped and
was in the 14th position coming through the first turn. With
several experienced fast riders behind him, Zimmer would have to
protect his lines and make few mistakes to keep his position. As the
race continued, Zimmer did all he could to keep the race savvy veterans
in his roost. The pressure proved to be too much for the rookie and a
couple of miscues caused him to drop back a few spots. Continuing his
charge to stay with the front group, Zimmer went into a corner a little
too hot and his front wheel washed out sending him to the ground.
Zimmer remounted quickly and only lost a couple of spots. Now setting
his sights on the top 20, Zimmer made a few moves and picked off one
rider at a time to finish the moto in 20th. Ryan Zimmer finished the weekend with a (27) (20) giving him the 22nd overall position.
