Press Release

Disappointed Mellote Ruled Out of Turkish Grand Prix

9th April 2009

CAS Honda's Cedric Melotte has been ruled out of this weekend's Motocross Grand Prix of Turkey due to the back injury he sustained less than one week ago in Bulgaria.

The 30-year-old Belgian rider jarred his back on the second uphill of the Sevlievo track in the opening moto of last weekend's Grand Prix, which aggravated an old injury, causing him excruciating pain in his back and legs.

After a visit from Clinica Mobile's Dr Scevola, Melotte was advised to sit out of the second race and return home to Belgium for a detailed diagnosis from his own doctors during this week. The CAS Honda pilot has had scans of the painful area, which confirmed the injury in the lower part of his back.

Melotte has had intensive treatment and an injection to relieve the agonising pain he has been suffering, but despite his best efforts, he will not be fit enough to ride in Istanbul. The Belgian racer must concentrate on making a full recovery before returning to the track aboard his CRF450R.

This leaves t,eammate Billy Mackenzie the task of being the sole CAS Honda representative this weekend for the third round of the World MX1 Championship.

Cedric Melotte #10
"I am so disappointed that this has happened. We had a great start to the year with winter testing and I've been feeling confident on the bike. I had a back injury maybe four or five years ago, and I jarred it hard when riding last weekend in Bulgaria. I've had some scans, as well as an injection in the lower part of my back, but I'm still in a lot of pain and the doctor has told me I need to rest to recover. Hopefully the situation will improve for Valkenswaard. I am so sorry to the team, as they have worked so hard for me, and I hope we can have some luck on our side, so that we are fit and fighting for good results soon."

Neil Prince: CAS Honda Team Manager
"This is obviously very unfortunate for Cedric and the team. After the last race it was obvious he was in quite some pain, having aggravated an old back injury. It is important that he concentrates on returning to fitness, as this kind of injury can be difficult to heal. He is undergoing intensive treatment at home and will sit out of this weekend's Grand Prix in order to recover. It's disappointing for Cedric and the team to come across a problem like this so early in the season, but hopefully he can be fit enough to ride again at Valkenswaard."
