Dave Coombs Sr. to be Honored at Hi Point!
Merced, Calif. – June 8, 2011: The Legends &
Heroes of Motocross Tour is proud to be honoring the legendary motocross
race promoter, Dave Coombs Sr. this Saturday, June 11, 2011 during the
Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship round at the prestigious High
Point Raceway in Mt. Morris Pennsylvania,
As pioneer in the moto industry, it was in the early 1970s when
enterprising motocross race promoter, Dave Coombs Sr., went on the
search for the perfect motocross track. In the fall of 1976, he moved
his races to Mount Morris, Pennsylvania, just across the state line
above Morgantown, West Virginia, using the rich soil of a farm owned by
the Holbert family, who were racers themselves. To his credit, not only
was Mr. Coombs responsible for developing a world class facility at Hi
Point and Steel City he spearheaded the first Supercross at Three Rivers
Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the first Arenacross event in
Columbus, Ohio, the Blackwater Enduro and the development of the GNCC
series.
Professor Gary Bailey states “Not only was Dave Coombs Sr. a
great promoter, he was an all around good guy! A guy that was always
there to help out. If you had a problem, no matter how busy he was, he
would find the time to assist you. If you never got a chance to know
Dave Sr., you missed knowing a great man with a big heart and big love
for your sport.”
The motocross world lost Dave Coombs Sr. on August 3, 1998, after a long
battle with leukemia, but his family and the Holberts continue to
produce the High Point National in his honor. The family business, MX
Sports, is also the driving force behind the AMA Amateur National
Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn's Ranch, the Can-Am Grand
National Cross Country Series, the AMA Pro ATVA Series, and now the
Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship.
In a tribute to his moto promotions accomplishments the first live
network television broadcast of an AMA Motocross race took on June 13,
2009, with the High Point National being featured live on NBC, and a
first for Professional Motocross in America.
"Dave Coombs inspiration and dedication to our sport was
paramount and his legacy is a tribute to his success" states Alex Moroz,
General Managing Partner of the Legends & Heroes MX Tour. For a PDF version on this press release, please chick here.
