Cobras Sweep 50cc Class Titles @ Loretta’s!

Clay Woeste captures the 51cc 7-8 AMA 2 Stock class and Lance “Lightning” Kobush takes the 51cc 4-6 AMA 1 Stock class

HILLSDALE, Mich., (August 5, 2008) – Adding to its already legendary heritage of unparalleled success in U.S. and global motocross racing, the American-built Cobra 50cc mini cycles added another two podium sweeps – including two more No. 1 plates for the Cobra factory hauler – at this past week’s Ski Nautiques AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

Leading the way for Cobra with championships in the premier 50cc class divisions were Kentucky’s Clay Woeste (51cc 7-8 AMA 2 Stock class) and Missouri’s Lance “Lightning” Kobush (51cc 4-6 AMA 1 Stock class), each bringing home the coveted “Loretta’s National Champion” No. 1 plate.

“Lance was on it all weekend – three holeshots, three moto wins and never even challenged,” said Cobra President Sean Hilbert of Kobush, who’s middle name “Lightning” was given to him by NASCAR driver Carl Edwards. “And Clay was unbelievable. Fell on the first lap of the third moto and raced all the way back to 2nd. Feet off the pegs, wide open throttle – he looked like a little Bob Hannah!”

In addition to Cobra/Kobush’s win in the 4-6 Stock 1 class, Florida’s Cullin Park and Arizona’s Preston Yost would round out the podium in 2nd and 3rd overall, respectively. And in the 7-8 Stock 2 class, Missouri’s Tanner Stack and California’s Sean Cantrell would complete the factory Cobra sweep (along with Woeste winning) of the 51cc podiums, going 2nd/3rd. In all Cobras would capture ten of the top ten spots in the 4-6 class (100-percent) and eight of the top ten (80-percent) places in the 7-8 class.

In the 65cc class the Cobra CX65 performed excellent with newcomer Michael Young (North Carolina) finishing 6th in the 7-9 Stock class and 9th in the 7-11 Modified class. “The 7-9 stock class was a who’s who of former Cobra racers ahead of Michael. And in the 7-11 Modified class, Michael was the highest placing nine-year-old (all the other ahead of him were ten or 11 years old),” said Hilbert. “So we were pleased with the performance of the CX65 at Loretta’s and look forward to improving on our results throughout the coming months and in ’09 at Loretta’s.” Cobra riders Bermuda’s Jyire Mitchell (Bermuda) and Austin Forkner (Missouri) also put up some top ten moto finishes throughout the week.

Rounding out the top ten on Cobras in the 4-6 51cc AMA Stock 1 class were:

4th Jackson Turpin (Georgia)

5th Stilez Robertson (California)

6th Brandon Hernandez (California)

7th Jack Rogers (Maryland)

8th Cam Owen (South Carolina)

9th Hunter Shaut (New York)

10th Brooks Weyandt (Ohio)

And rounding out the top ten in the 7-8 51cc AMA Stock 2 class were:

4th Chase Sexton (Illinois)

6th Justin Dunn (North Carolina)

8th David Milana (New York)

9th Jonathan Lee (North Carolina)

10th Hayden Justice (Ohio)

Next up for the Cobra racers is the Branson (Mo.) MX National, Oct. 9-12, followed by the Mini O’s in Gainesville, Fla., Thanksgiving week.
