Bobryshev Wins Overall at Mallory Park

British MX1 Championship – Round 2

21st March 2010

CAS Honda’s Evgeny Bobryshev took the overall honours at Mallory
Park today for the second round of the British MX1 Championship, and
with it the series lead after three superb performances.

Bobryshev was lying pole after qualifying in the wet conditions
at the Leicestershire track, but after a small mistake in his flying
Superpole lap, was forced to settle for second on the gate with teammate
Gareth Swanepoel in sixth position.

In race one it was Swanepoel who took the holeshot and
demonstrated a flag to flag race winning, flawless performance aboard
his CRF 450R, while Bobryshev, who had gated second, battled arm-pump
troubles and attacks from Gordon Crockard in the closing stages to
finish in a strong third position.

In the second moto fortunes were reversed as Bobryshev soared
from the gate into the lead, where the 22-year-old from Kondrovo,
Russia, remained for the entire 20-minute plus two-lap moto, despite
being pushed hard in the final part of the race by Stephen Sword.
Teammate Swanepoel suffered a poor start, and after all of his hard work
in the first race, the 25-year-old South African racer finished in
ninth position.

In the third heat Bobryshev once again fired away from the line
for the holeshot, with teammate Swanepoel close behind in third. For
Bobryshev it wouldn’t be as easy as the second race, as Mickael Pichon
stole the lead on lap three from the Russian racer, who then dropped
back on lap seven, as he battled the challenging Mallory Park track to
take up fourth place to the chequred flag; a consistent performance that
gave him his first ever overall win and the championship lead after two
rounds.

Swanepoel crossed the line in fifth place, to finish fifth
overall and ended the day with a healthy third place in the
championship, despite the conditions at these first two tracks not being
particularly suited to his riding style.

The CAS Honda duo will now focus on their preparations for the
first Grand Prix of the season in Bulgaria on the third and fourth of
April.

Evgeny Bobryshev #777: 1st Overall
“Today has been very good and I am very happy. In qualifying I
was in pole position from the last lap with a good time, but in
Superpole I found it a little more difficult and a little mistake meant I
only finished second. In the first race I really struggled with
arm-pump after 10-minutes, and Crockard was pushing me so hard in the
last few laps, but I managed to hold him off for third. In race two I
holeshotted and I just held my lead until the end for the win, which was
good. In the third race I got a good start, before Pichon passed me on
the third lap. I struggled a lot with the low sun and not being able to
see so well, but fourth was enough for the overall win and this is very
good. We now have the championship lead and I want to thank the team for
everything, because the bike is good for me and I am looking forward to
having the red plate.”

Gareth Swanepoel #8: 5th Overall
“Qualifying wasn’t so bad, although I found it a bit tough at
first for some reason, but sixth was okay, and I was sixth in Superpole.
The first race for me was perfect. I took the holeshot and was able to
maintain my lead from start to finish. In the second race I got a
terrible start after I was bumped by another rider and got stuck. I came
back to ninth, which was pretty mediocre and not so great. In the final
race I had a fairly decent start and was battling around fifth place
the whole race. The conditions were tough with a lot of mud this
morning, then the track dried with ruts and bumps everywhere, which was
difficult, although I’m happy with how the bike is working and things
are coming together. All things considered I can’t be too upset with the
result, as the track situation wasn’t ideal for me, and we’re still
right up there in the championship. I’m now going back to Belgium to do
my final preparations for the Grand Prix races, with some hard training
this week, ready for Bulgaria.”

CAS Honda Team Manager: Neil Prince
“Today has been a good day for us. Evgeny rode some good races,
and to take the overall win in only his third outing on the bike is a
credit to the team and him as a rider. He still hasn’t really had that
much bike time, but he has been rewarded for his good starts and
consistency today, to take the championship lead. Gareth also rode well,
as these conditions are really not best suited to him. He is third in
the championship, and also won another race today, which shows how well
he has gelled with our machinery. Now our focus switches to the World
Championship, where the riders will need to step up their game over
longer distant races and the tougher competition. So far we’re on target
with where we need to be at this stage, and I hope we can only progress
from here.”
