Americans Dominate Day One Of Red Bull FIM Motocross Of Nations

BUDDS CREEK, 22 September 2007- Budds Creek is surely home ground for each of the members of team USA; Ricky Carmichael (MX1), Ryan Villopoto (MX2) and Tim Ferry (Open) all won their qualifying heats, making a healthy home crowd go mad along the 1500 long metre circuit.

The Americans have dominated this opening day of the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations (from left to right: Tim Ferry; Ricky Carmichael; Ryan Villopoto)

The Americans also dominated the three practice sessions, with each of them being the fastest in the respective class.

Team South Africa ended the day with a solid second place, after Grant Langston tried to chase Carmichael in the MX1 moto. Even if the American crashed, Langston could not close in on him, and finished second. Gareth Swanepoel was also fast in his heat, where he finished third after battling it out with Antonio Cairoli for the runner up spot. On the other hand Wyatt Avis ended the Open class heat in seventh position.

Italy qualified third, with MX2 World Champion Antonio Cairoli being the best finisher of the three team members. Tony was second behind an incredible Villopoto, while David Philippaerts clinched a third place after Billy Mackenzie and Steve Ramon both crashed in the MX1 heat. Davide Guarneri’s race was quite unlucky, because of a crash at the start.

Tony Cairoli will try to repeat last year’s win

Even with Chad Reed being the worst of the three members, because of a crash in his qualifying heat, the Aussies still brought home a good result, with a fourth place in the qualifications. Michael Byrne ended second behind Ferry in the Open race, and Andrew McFarlane finished sixth in the MX2 heat.

The Belgians rounded off the top five after an eventful day; the best placed rider was Ken De Dycker, who actually had the worst start as he crashed with Guarneri. The furious Belgian worked his way up from the bottom of the top ten to an eventual fourth place. MX1 World Champion Steve Ramon crashed and finished fifth while youngster Jeremy Van Horebeek dropped down to a final eleventh place.

Germany finished right behind, in sixth place, with Max Nagl taking the holeshot in his heat and Marcus Schiffer ending fifth in the Open class –he normally races MX2.

Portugal was seventh, but with Joaquim Rodrigues leading the first laps of the Open class heat they were hoping for a better result.

France, eighth, struggled a little bit with Open class rider Pierre Alexandre Renet, finishing twenty-eighth, while Sebastien Pourcel and Nicolas Aubin both entered the top six of their heats.

Great Britain was ninth, and Spain rounded off the top ten.

New Zealand was the most disappointed country at the end of the day, as both Ben Townley and Daryl Hurley injured themselves in practice and did not race their qualifying heats. Only Cody Cooper raced, finishing eleventh, while New Zealand was the last of the 31 countries participating in the event.
