When lacing a wheel to hub does one have to, (pardon my ignorance) set the rim a certain distance from the sprocket and brake rotor? or does it center itself? The reason I'm asking is some time ago took a wheel apart painted the hub real nice laced the wheel back to the hub, did not " true" it. Then let it sit for two years. I want to finish it now and just now thought of this. I am hoping I can do this myself, looked on couple of you tube videos, on wheel lacing, and did not see this mentioned. The wheel is rear wheel off a 2002 YZ125. I hope this question makes sense to some wheel builder out there. Thank you.
At least for Honda there was offset dimension given from hub sprocket surface to edge of the rim. It might be good to know that.

Thank you. That helps a lot.
I always measure the wheel before relacing just to make sure, as long as the wheel is still intact. Not really sure if or how many bikes have an offset but only takes a minute to check
Yes, usually an offset on the rear. KXs are about 10mmon the chain side.
Lay a straight edge across the hub and measure down to the rim before you take the old one apart. Sometimes you have different spoke lengths just for that.
