Hi I have a Yamaha WR 450 2003 model. It changes gears from 1st to 4th no problems and then fifth gear there’s nothing it just goes into neutral when I put bike up and engine is off the fifth gear will engage then but won’t when running wondering what’s going on here?
Poll
You could either
A: tear it down
B: just call it a loss and grab a more modern bike if able.
going to need to split cases. could be one of many things, gear/circlip/shifting fork failure.
things i would not do: ride as is. depending on what failed, it could fail further and cause you a crash if things lock up at speed.
Thanks for that angry bear thought I did it would be something pretty major and yes probably a good idea not to ride it anyway looks like I got a lot of work thanks fellas
Tear it down. Bent shift fork, bad gear dog, etc..
The Shop
I have a Bud Light that says it's a fork issue.
Yeah you're in for a deep dive.
Has anyone ever been in the transmission?
I acquired a KX 500 that wouldn't shift correctly, and it turns out that 2 of the forks are ALMOST identical, but are not.
One of the few people in Texas still drinking Bud Lite!!!
Call in sick get some bud light and open that case!
Yep time to call l in sick. so you reckon one of the selector forks must be worn and is not pushing the gear into place ?
He ain't drinking them, he trying to offload them.
To the OP and as mentioned in many of the posts above, you going to have to tear the motor apart to find the offending part. The bike is old so inspect all the other gears and associated bits n bobs while its open. If you plan on keeping the bike then spend some of your hard earned cash at rebuilding the motor back to Zero hours.
Goodluck...and yup, I'm South African and will gladly except all unwanted Buds...DM me for shipping address.
