Points of note include the fact that Washougal, round nine of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, was the most viewed fixture in the 2024 SuperMotocross World Championship. 1.1 million people tuned into the broadcast across the different viewing options. Not only that, but Washougal was also the most viewed SuperMotocross event since the 2021 race season.

I have heard in the past to eliminate Outdoor races because Supercross is the most Popular and TV is the viewing is the most important thing , but a outdoor race is the most viewed?

You would think that the first or the last race would be most watched...

Wish they could fix their camera angles to get viewers a real feel for how gnarly it is and the speeds they run.

MX is where it’s at but we still need SX to get our fix during the winter months

MX is much more difficult to cover, because the tracks are not designed for optimum camera placement, whereas modern stadiums are. Outdoor tracks are a logistical nightmare for production crews.

Interesting!

On a personal level, Southwick is the one I enjoy watching the most.

thats definitely true but I think the production on the MX side is as good, if not better then SX,  Yes I realize its mostly the same crew.

They do a pretty good job, considering the challenges. But the comment I was directly addressing was about getting camera angles that best convey the sense of speed and challenge that outdoor racers face. In my experience, that would mean camera placement closer to track level, rather than the elevated positions currently in use. High POV means more of the track can be covered by a single camera, but it reduces the sensation of speed. The drone provides an excellent view of lines and dicing, but completely flattens out the sense of height of the jumps and hills.

Yes this was what I’m getting at. When some local kids can produce videos with go pros and I phones that bring out the raw speed I would think a paid professional production crew could find a way to capture this also, if only in a few areas of the track it would still be an improvement. And as mentioned in the stadiums this should be even easier to accomplish

I definitely agree that those angles can help.  MXGP may do a slightly better job of this.  The local kids videos you speak of are really cool (buttery, Tom, etc is I assume who you are referring too) but imagine trying to show a race in this style, it would be super choppy cutting every couple seconds from one camera to another.  It definitely could be incorporated more though.  I do like the wider angles they seem to take more often in moto so you can see more then one rider.  Seems like in SX they really zoom in more then necessary.  Can't imagine we will every get there but camera's on every rider/bike that the viewer could choose would be awesome (a la f1).

If they ever eliminated the outdoors, that would be the day I stop following the sport in the states

Agree with the others that like those closer, tighter shots. I always, always watch the various RAW videos that get put out. So good. Particularly Tom's.

Just had a couple of quick thoughts; do the Race Day Live/Qualifying views count towards that weekend's viewership numbers, or are they a completely different data set?  If I am streaming and I change to another app and close out Peacock, but then go back about a half hour later is that considered 2 separate viewership events?

If they're tracking the Mac addresses of devices your phone would count as one, but if you pulled it up on a computer or smart TV it would add them as separate viewings.

(not bashing on the outdoors, just curious with the full numbers)

Not sure why it ended up the most viewed but I was there in person and it was an amazing day. The weather was awesome, the track was primo and the crowd was huge. I hope to get back there a few more times to watch in person.
