Honda Frame Wear

2022 CRF450 with 36.0 hours. Trying to get a gauge on how many have seen this. Bike is down with top end issues, pulled the plastics to find this. This is my first Honda and I don't recall any of my previous bikes showing frame wear due to plastic.

Thoughts?

It’s not a big deal, typical on aluminum frame bikes, always looks worse than it is. Pad it with something.

Mine has shown this wear as well, 2023 50 hours pretty similar to yours.

wow not only does that suck, but having top end issues at 36hrs? None of this makes me feel warm and fuzzy about the 23 crf I bought. Neither did the crappy ass'd welds on the frame of the 22 yz450 I have as well.

You'd think some enterprising genius would come up with some simple velcro/two side tape attached carbon fibre pads for these bikes. Charge a premium since its carbon. May or may not be an eventual structural issue, but it sure looks like ass. I get 13% royalties for this suggestion.

I noticed some minor wear before it got bad, I simply put on some protective stuff (not expensive at all) and problem solved...no biggie AT all

This is a long time Honda thing going back to the 2 strokes. Never seen it become an issue. Wouldn’t hurt to keep an eye on it over time though.

This is pretty common on aluminum framed Hondas (and probably all aluminum perimeter frames). Dirt and sand collect behind the shrouds and the plastic grinds it against the frame as the bike flexes. Over time, you get these grooves. Yours are probably not a big deal. I imagine it could be a problem if it got bad enough, though. I've seen some used bikes with pretty deep ones that you'd probably want to weld. I put little strips of adhesive-backed foam on my frame where the plastic crosses/touches it and that does the trick.

Looks pretty bad for 36 hours but this is common.

Throw in same wear on subframes, and chain wear on frames/subframes.

As others have said it's a common issue, I tried the foam, but it wore through so now I tape a small sheet of Teflon to the frame...

Even a simple strip of clear graphics vinyl would have it covered for a good while, especially if anyone gets to it before it gets to that point.

Classic problem, classic solution.

We use 3M paint protection film on those spots. Also where the cables rub the frame tube.

I slap some strips of gorilla tape over the known spots before they wear. Next I’ll try the 3m clear stuff mentioned above.

I'm 100% onboard with all of that.

I've done the same on all my aluminum bikes after seeing my 1998 Honda develop some light wear marks.
I use the PVC pipe wrap tape.  It comes in a 2" wide roll, 20 mil thickness and it's tough as nails.  It will last a full year without wearing through.
On my two stroke YZ's I find that the airboxes and the seat pans will wear through the subframe.

Normal all aluminum frames do it! I just used zip ties in the area's  needed quick fix and can be done anytime everybody has zip ties lol
