Been watching a bunch of old races lately..
Check out this track from 09, St Louis.. designed by Travis from memory. 450 main starts at 25:00
Lots of dirt, steep big slow technical jumps, over under, dragon up to dragon down, split lanes..
there appears to be a lot more dirt and the pace is much much slower with the more steep and technical options.
tons of different options for passing, I know Travis designed something special, but surely we can take something from these older tracks..
9 whoops is a fucking joke
Cool track, seemed like multiple fast lines with different rhythms. Hard to tell if it would work today as its almost pre determined what the fastest line will be during practice.
That line J-law used to pass Alessi in his Heat Race was sweet.
Between this and the other thread I think you need to come to terms with Eli's best being behind him. Doesnt matter what track or surface, other than mud, Eli is not going to track down and pass Jett, im sorry that is reality but here we are. Enjoy the show. Dungey fans had to do the same thing too when your boy showed up to the big leagues bro - its okay, hes an all-timer with millions and Porsches, he came, saw and conquered.
Wrong thread
The Shop
Racing and the tracks back then were way better than they are now.
I disagree, that race before Daytona I can’t remember what city it was, when Eli was coming through the pack and caught right up to Cooper, I feel like Eli had the speed to get Jett, just my opinion.
This track was so sick. I don’t understand why there’s all of the sudden a lack of dirt. if they can truck in 100 dump truck loads, what is the difference between that and 130? I never understood that. It’s DIRT. How could bringing in a little bit extra really cost that much more
^ Dirt costs something. Trucking it costs manpower and fuel. There's probably an ecological consideration in most states, as well as a tax or tariff penalty per cubic yard (OMG, you're moving the dirt around?? What about THE CHILDREN??? That's going to cost you extra.)
I love that track. One of the few I remember.
See this is what we're telling you guys. These are real tracks with minimal ruts. Just look how perfect those corners are! You can go anywhere and never see a rut. BRING BACK LIME and long REAL whoops.
That was one of the best track designs.
Less dirt equals more money for Feld.
The step on/off of the bridge, and the step on jump over the start were sick obstacles
I know Ralph gets alot of flak around here, but man could that guy bring the energy. Just made you feel like every lap was the last lap.
I miss Ralph.....flubs and all. Ralph was supercross..
I also miss the tracks from the old days. These days, it's gotten to be an "extreme sport-nitro circus" aerial acrobatics show. One that's practiced to death all week long like gymnastics.
Shit production crew who does the same stale product year after year and told good job, tracks have been lacking going close to 10 years now. Dirt has clearly reduced, lack of 180 bowl turns and get some damn nets. None of this is rocket science, sport is going backwards in that regard. Forward in some areas like a small bump in rider pay and smx. But fundamentally we are reverting backwards
Hush it, Ralph.
Easily fixable though! Clearly someone at Feld or production crew pays a little attention as the split box is now 50/50. Still small on the screen but a step in the right direction. As for the tracks, more technical obstacles to slow riders down and make racing safer and more entertaining. The tracks from the 2000-2016ish blow these out of the water. These are boring watered down versions in the name of safety. Feld/Ama got it wrong
those wall berms were what really stands out about Pastranas track to me, I wonder why they never tried it again
Pit Row
The tracks have been crap this year. Indy ruts last weekend were just BS, they weren't even done with practice and the track was an absolute mess. From the start of timed practice to the end the track deterioration was appalling.
I would say they already sucked back then. For me real sx tracks were on 2 strokes, peaky, slow, technical. The track design went way too soft (and fast) when the carbed 4 strokes were bogging. I also think it went too far on ruttosupercross, super hard pack is sx for me. These big ruts are too treaturous, anything can happen at any time.
I don't think you are completely wrong, but I also think that 2 strokes made the tracks seem more technical since they were harder to ride than modern bikes.
I used to be very common for lots of 125s to not be able to jump the triple every lap, now the 250fs can come to a stop 20ft from the take off and still make it.
I had some doubts, you know, the old saying "it was better before" and I wanted to make sure my memory was ok, so I am currently into this vid', where even MC could not do the finish jump in round 3, while still winning the event.
It was more hard pack back then, less ruts, quite peaky, and tbh it was designed slow compared to the 2010-nowadays era. It may be good to mix it all, starts are also too important now, and personally I think big ruts are too unpredictable, I would have hated to otb not knowing what happened. The most technical tracks were around 2000-2005 I believe, I would have been scared just walking on it.
Here's a good one: When's the last time anyone saw a track with a flat corner without ruts? No one has worried about washing out since RUTcross started.
I don't understand the hate. He may have made his mistakes like everyone does but he brought the excitement for sure. His voice will always be engrained in my head growing up. Good times.
wow....what a track design
It’s like comparing 2 different sports if you compare 15 years ago to now, so different
remember the 4 stroke game changing single row plow/disc effect?
a lot changed
Don't care what anyone says. The best days of SX were with 2-strokes. Glad I was around for that era.
It's just not the same these days.
Tracks are now fast and easier for these top Supercross racers
No over powered 450’s and no rut-o-cross in those days. Much better racing.
