I rode bikes until my mid 30's then swapped to quads and have been riding them for the last 20 years so I'm not familiar with the four stroke dirt bikes. I've found a 11 kx250 with 96 hours, the top end was redone at 60. Looks clean and runs well, they are asking $2900. My grandson is 15, 5'10 and weighs about 160. He has a Raptor 700 quad and also rides his friends cr250f. We ride mostly logging roads in the woods and trails. My question is the 11 Kx a good bike? He wants a dirt bike but I won't buy anything that isn't fuel injected, I'm done with carbs. Another is how big can you be and still ride a 250 in the woods? Don't want to buy him a 250 and then next year he's too big for it and needs a 450.

Thought I'd add he is a experienced rider, has been riding his whole life.
My friend was a top A rider locally a few years ago, still hauls ass on his 2011 with at least 250+ hours without the bottom end being opened. It gets bare minimum maintenance and it’s nuts rode off. I’d buy one that wasn’t hammered without hesitation if I was looking for a good bike and not drop a ton of cash.
No amateur rider will ever “need” a 450 IMO.
I didn’t think the kx250f was FI until 2012?
I loved my 2011, that bike was so much fun with a few tweaks and was pretty damn bulletproof. Never needed a bottom end the few years I owned it. My biggest complaint was figuring out the front fork, but once we did it was an awesome bike. It was the first year of FI for the kx250f as well, never an issue.

Should be a great bike. The 250fs are all pretty good but in general, the newer the better. He shouldn't out-grow that bike ever unless he gets super into lifting and eating. That bike will rip on the terrain you're describing.
The 2011 kx250f was good but in 2012 kawasaki added a second injector and that really boosted the top end. A second hand bike is always a gamble as you don't know what's been done to it but that was a good bike
Any used 250F is a gamble unless you know it's entire history for certain.
Lots of old 250Fs out there, I would say they are proven overall. I had a 2011 KX250, real good bike and it'd work great for the OP's intended use.
Went and picked it up today and took it for its first rip. Ran great with no problems.
Good choice, one of the most reliable 250f's ever made. Handle good too
Nobody is ever too big for a 250f, just power preferences.
Make sure the suspension gets serviced.
