When it sounds like grit it is usually the shock mud flap / shock splash guard rubbing on the swingarm. The sucking noise means it has air in the system. So if air has got in then oil has got out and it needs rebuilding.
Shock seal is prab shot. New shock seal, dust wiper, and o rings are in order with some fresh quality fluid. Do the forks at the same time if in doubt on those get it all fresh together that RM WILL THANK YOU!
Many years past the normal service time if never done. It is a regular service item. The shaft may also be worn if the seal head is worn very bad.
If should cost about $90 plus parts to get it serviced, but check around.
When was it serviced last?
Doing it regularly?
