so i recently took off my wheels to get the tires changed and i found out that the white plastic on the brake piston is in pieces so my question is, why is that plastic thing even there and what does it do?
i have been riding my bike in the winter and the rear brakes are working.

One would think its to lessen the effect of heat transfer from the brake pads in an attempt not to boil the brake fluid.
