kx 250 1988 kickstart slipping

i have picked up a kx 250 and the kickstart does not engage is there any special alignment needed when installing I have found a dot mark on the back of the spindle which is aligned with the dot on the back of the cog with the tab

The spring appears to be tensioned any other clues would be welcome

sometimes it will catch and turn over and return fine and other times it seems to slip by

This was common on that era of KX"s, My 89 did this in 89., If you take the mechanism apart you will see the teeth between the two halfs are worn down, you need new parts or remachined parts, me thinks NLA from Kawasaki, eBay & hope for the best....

also you can grind an edge on those teeth if your careful, then i found a thin shim, maybe a tranny shim, i put under the spring to apply more pressure, i rode 89 kxs in 89 an that happened alot
