So it looks like this bolt is supposed to hold the shift detent in place by threading into the center hole pictured. Problem is the hole is too small and doesn’t even look threaded, in every picture i see online the hole looks bigger and is threaded. Am I missing a part or something?

I assume you have a 2006+ bike.

You have your shift drum in backwards. The other side's center hole is threaded and includes an off center protrusion/stub that aligns shift pawl mechanism.. not an off center hole as pictured.

Note, you also don't have the OEM bolt on the shift stopper lever (small lever with bearing on end.) The oem bolt is special in that it has a shoulder under face of the head that allows the lever to freely move after being torqued down. There is also a washer between the arm and the case. Any ordinary bolt won't work in this application as once torqued, the stopper lever wont float freely as designed. Its critical.

Shift drum in backwards as stated previously. Shift index lever bolt is correct for '13 or newer.

I'm going to assume that's a pre 99 YZ250. Here are a couple pictures from a 04 (99+ is the same), maybe it helps.
If it is a 99+, upgrade to the newest shift stopper with a solid roller to avoid the bearing equipped one from ever coming apart and grenading the trans.

This. Shift drum is backwards. Easiest way to describe is side with 2 holes faces out.

But that allen head bolt is correct assuming it has the shoulder on it. Its oem even though the parts diagram shows a 10mm flange bolt.

Thanks guys you were right. Split the cases again and flipped the shift drum around, all is well.

Definitely replace item #7 with the newer solid wheel version as Matt Fisher said above. I believe 2016 is when it changed.
