I have a 1981 YZ125H that my son and I just finished a partial restoration on. It ran pretty well for a while, then died suddenly. After waiting a bit, it started up and rode OK for a while, but didn’t seem to have the power it should on hills. We noticed it was popping a bit and when we stopped, we noticed tendrils of smoke coming from behind the stator cover. After opening, we discovered the wiring had melted down. I’m thinking it may have been improperly grounded, but not sure. Has anyone had a similar issue? See attached pic of the stator.

I would suggest that the stator just had an internal short in the windings.

Thanks! I’ll be replacing the stator with a new one made by a stator shop in California. Then I’ll test the rest of the electrical, like I should have before I tried to start it up.

It’s also possible the CDI box has a short and did that

Check out the magneto/flywheel. Definitely arcing going on. It melted the magnets.
