What is the consensus these days on the valve stem jam nut? It is provided to lock down on the rim. However most say to run it up to the cap to avoid ripping stem from tube when the tube/tire inevitably spin on the rim. Opinions?

Ive always done mine snug. Cant say ive ever had a stem rip on me. IMO the rim lock is there for a reason. If the tire doesnt spin the tube shouldnt either.

I donot use a nut above the rim, I use Honda style rubbers on the stem, RMC sells them for around 2.00$ a pack. As stated above neither method will prevent your stem from ripping off if your tire spins on the rim, that is rim lock related.

I also use just the rubber grommet thing on the valve stem.

I use nothing. I toss the nut after I get the tire aired up and then put the valve stem cap on. Been doing it that way since I started riding.

I run them snug. It's so you can push an air chuck onto a low-pressure tire, nothing more. The rim lock should be doing the job of keeping the tire and tube from spinning.

Honda style rubbers to keep the dirt out and let the valve stem float.

Thanks. I too use the rubber stops. Then nut. Then cap. I tighten the rim lock pretty tight, yet still get some slippage. Guess it’s time for new rim locks. Which brand you recommend? And how tight can I tighten them?

I use those Motion Pro LiteLoc rim locks. They are tidy! I also drill the rim so as to position them opposite the valve stem.

have always backed the nut up the cap by hand so I can see when the tire slips it changes direction of the stem
