The threaded insert in the gas tank where the shroud screw goes is stripped out. Any idea how I can fix this without spending $250 on a new tank?
I'm not sure that a helicoil will work since I can't run a tap through.

You could go up a bolt size
Tapping it is the problem. You can't run a tap deep enough to cut the threads.

Have you considered trying a bottoming tap?

Put your cordless drill on the bolt and spin it for a few minutes. The plastic on the tank will get hot from friction and melt . Grab the bolt with some pliers and pull the entire insert out of the tank. Buy a new insert and use jb weld to hold it back in tank. Let it cure for 24 hours and then you can screw your shroud bolt back in. Don’t go crazy tight on it. I’ve done this a few times before and it has worked well.

Also be sure to use anti seize on the bolt thread.

The bolt didn't seize in the insert, there's literally no threads left in it. I'm going to try drilling it and putting a threaded insert in. I had to order the inserts so they will be here Wednesday.

This is a bike I recently acquired, it will get stripped down to have everything greased and inspected. I use anit seize almost everywhere on my bikes. In 20 years, I've never had a bolt seize, strip, or cross thread. To say I'm meticulous is an understatement.
