Anybody know of a decent set for smaller bolts? Could 8mm bolts backed out and stripped. If I had longer bolts they would work but I don’t have any longer euro bolts.

I got a tap and die set from harbor freight. Does the job i guess. Start with something like that and then just order bottom taps for whatever bolt size you need if you dont have it. If you mess up a bolt just buy another one. Dont run a die on it.

I have found that rarely do I need a die for my MXers. Matter of fact in 30+ yrs. racing, never used a die on my bike.

Go to Ace hardware & purchase the 8mm tap you need. When you need another tap, purchase it too. Mostly there are three taps you need. 6-8-10mm. Sometimes 4 for those pesky euro bikes.

No need to buy a set that for the most part, you will never use three quarters of them.

I need an 8 mm tap. M5x16 is the screw size. It’s for the ignition cover on a 2015 250sx. So ace or Lowe’s should have it?

Can you link me to one? I looked on Lowe’s and couldn’t find any singles.

Sounds kindof weird, but oreillys auto parts sells taps, helicoil kits, etc. ive had better luck there than a home improvement store.

It has an 8mm head but when I ordered the bolt the size is m5x16.

Bolts are classified by thread diameter and pitch, not the hex size or size socket you use with it. your bolt is an m5 thread. Likely an M5x0.8 which is a metric coarse thread. You would need an M5x0.8 tap.

The 16 is 16mm long from the end of the bolt to the bottom of the head.

Above are direct answers to your question, but i highly highly recommend you learn about hardware if youre working on stuff.

a standard tap may not work for you in a blind hole because the end of the tap is tapered and wont cut a full thread. A bottom tap does just that. It taps to the bottom of a blind hole.

Grainger is an industrial supply website that has all that kind of stuff.

Harbor freights set sucks ass, ask me how I know. Lowes sells the irwan brand taps and dies which is rebranded Hansen. Made in USA, and a good quality steel.
That said, you dont need a full set just for dirt bikes.

If you are right that a 5x.8 is correct...

Most bikes I have worked on takes a 6x1.0 Yes, I have a new husky, but never paid attention to sizes of bolts. Yet!

And yes a bottoming tap would be best in your case.

If in doubt, take the bolt to Ace and ask for a tap to fit. Remember they are the helpful peeps!

That’s the right size tap I screwed it into the bolt hole but the bolt still isn’t all the way snug when I try to put it in

Would a rethread tap have worked for you?

What is the bolt holding on??

The bolt is holding on the ignition cover. If I take the Cover off and screw it on it catches onto the threads at the very end. But because there is a space with the cover it doesn’t go deep enough. But I can’t find a longer bolt that looks like the euro bolts. It’s length is 16mm

I just went to Home Depot and bought a m5x18mm and it fit perfectly. Just not a torx Head. Going to look online and see if I can find any torx in that size Photo

You will find metric taps at most Ace Hardware stores. If you aren't sure how to clean threads up look at some youtube videos before try it so you don't end up at the next stop which is a helicoil. You can buy a bolt kit on Ebay or Amazon for KTM/Husqvarna for under $20 and it will have all the replacement screws you need.

The older I get, the faster I was.
