I'm in the middle of testing the fitment of different 4-stroke shocks on an 89 cr250. my plan was to find a shock off of a newer 4-stroke that has the best fitment In the 89 then try and find an a-kit shock to use (will require slight modifications to fit and have somewhat of the same geometry as stock).

Here is a 2012 RMZ 450 shock on the 89 cr250

Not the exact answer you are looking for... but I raced a guy last year who has done what you are looking to do.
He managed to fit an Ohlins from a later model CRF (2015 I believe) to his 1989 CR250. He was fast and his bike looked as though it handled well!

Thanks for the reply, I have seen some ohlins shock fit the 89 cr250, I believe the a KX450F shock from ohlins will work as well. Im looking to make the 89 cr250 fit its theme using showa suspension like the factory HRC team used back in 89 but with it upgraded for todays supercross standards

How did your expirement end?
The experiment is still going and I currently have a full list of shocks that can be used, but all will need to be machined down to size. The only a-kit shock that will work without being machined down is from a 97-98 cr250, all it needs are some internal spacers to shorten it a little. I’m currently trying to find a machine shop willing to shorten some of these shock bodies.
