Why are shock shaft nuts peened on? Is the theory behind this just making sure it doesn’t back out while riding? Seems like a pain to have to have to grind the threads every time you do maintenance. Why not just use a locking nut and red loc-tite. Seems like that would be plenty.

Quick and fail safe way to secure nut and avoid lawsuit. Use red when reinstalling.

Liability, don’t want that to come loose and worst case scenario someone gets hurt.

If the OEM peening is on it ,its never come apart
After that yes red lactate on the nut-depending on who took it apart and quality of the grind
for insurance use a new nut

So, do most suspension companies just throw a new nut and some high strength loctite on after the peening is ground off? Or do they peen it every time? My shock is revalved for Moto and I had it apart about a week ago but didn't think to look closely at the nut. I'm just wondering what I should do because next time I service it I want to replace the bumper.

Insurance is run a new nut cause it will not have material missing from it
Use a spot of Red lactate

Have seen nasty grind jobs to get rid of the peen
Is it Showa or KYB?

Once the peen is ground off the first time, there won't be enough material to peen it again. One shot deal. Locktite after that. If you are careful about grinding it and only remove the minimum, you could, in theory, reuse the nut. But best to plan ahead and have a new nut on-hand and ready to put on. Use a torque wrench.

Not my bike, but man this one looks like shit. Did they really reuse the grinded up stock nut?

hey guys I'm working on a 2015 CRF450 rear KYB shock (same one pictured) and I was having a hard time bleeding. It seemed like there was an air bubble and the rod/shaft/piston assembly would just get sucked down into the body and I couldn't move it up or down to bleed it properly. So I removed the shaft and set it into a cup of shock oil to see if any bubbles came up. Same thing happens. Its like there's an air pocket. I pull up to get it out of the cup of oil and the piston ring just falls off. Does this mean the ring is worn out?

Looks like some sort of after market ring. The OEM one wouldn't have splits in it like this would it?

That type of ring needs to be compressed to fit in shock body. The O rings behind it provides sealing and pushes it against the shock body. Normal for it to not sit tightly on piston. Yours looks worn. I would replace it. $25 SDI Shock piston bushing at RMATVMC
The metering rod in the shock shaft is stuck so it will not allow bleeding. Stick a small wooden or plastic rod in the hole in the shaft to push the the rod needle down. Make sure your rebound clicker is full CCW soft.

Is rebound backed all the way out?
Make sure by pushing the rod down from top of shaft with small
allen

Well that sucks, I was already going to place an RMATVMC'S order for tosme other stuff but it's not showing they have it for that bike. I'll call SDI and MX tech and see if they make one. The OEM one looks like such a pain to install

Yes Rebound is backed off all the way. This is the type of KYB shock that has the rebound clicker on top with the compression. Do I don't know how I'd check if it's working

Something ain't right, this shock has been a total pain in the ass and does NOT want to be bled. Like I said, when I try to bleed it and start pumping the shaft, it's almost like there's an air pocket and the shaft just doesn't want to once move once pushed down to a certain point. I just did my bike the other day (17 crf450) and this same process was so easy I could do it with my eyes closed.

Weird, Rocky Mountain site doesn't show that SDI piston bushing fitting a 2015 CRF450. I punched in 2009 CRF450 which is also KYB and turns out OEM piston ring is the same part number as 15 and it says they have it. Should I just order that? I'm like half an hour away from SDI, I've been there before, really cool place. I may just call and see if they have it.

Piston band and O-Rings are the exact same.part numbers for 09 and 15. But the pistons themselves are different. Weird.

Did you push the metering rod down?

I put a small Allen down there and pushed but I didn't feel anything. Does this style shock even have that? Like I said earlier this is the KYB style with the rebound clicker on top

I wasn't seeing any oil coming through the two bleed holes on the shaft so I blew compressed air through them. Seemed loo eventually I could feel air come through the top. Went to bleed again and same thing. Just gets stuck down in the shock body.

Something assembled wrong in the stack that is not allowing the rebound shims to flex and let oil through the piston?
