Used bike I picked up from a friend, thought maybe oil was coming out of one of the washers from the drain plugs. Anyway had it leaned over cleaning it up and noticed oil dripping out fast from the front sprocket. Is there some type of seal in there? If so is it just a matter of taking the sprocket off and replacing the seal?

Countershaft seal is bad... be careful when you take it out not to gouge the case... very easy to replace, as long as the case hasn’t been worn through by the chain or broken by a rock... or anything along those lines, that’s your problem...

Thanks man, I did find this. Can’t really tell if it’s a casting mark or something or a crack ? the oil wasn’t coming out of this though almost too scared to go look further?. It was for sure coming out from behind the sprocket.

Going to pressure wash everything in the morning and look closer, makes me feel a little sick.

just a heads up, looks like your front sprocket may be on backwards as well

Also, don't for get about the collar, and "d" ring on the out put shaft behind the sprocket as well as the seal. All most likely could be bad.

Thanks guys, I haven’t dug into it yet waiting on new sprockets, chain, chain guide and slider and plan on doing it all at once, already got the countershaft seal. Also clutch cable snapped last night just sitting on the bike pulling the clutch in and out. Guess the bike isn’t in the best of shape. As expected with used bikes though. Just hoping the internals are I’m good shape. Would you guys suggest just replacing everything that goes with the countershaft sprocket?

Yes, the bike is 13 years old with unknown history.

You will be able to buy that part. It is part of the front fork dampening unit. You will need to look at E-bay or other places to find a used unit.

No luck still, search Craigslist too hoping to come across a used fork. Only thing found on eBay was for a 2016, haven’t been able to find just the cap on any parts websites. Sad

You should be able to use any 47mm showa twin chamber fork to replace the cap... if you’re going to just swap out the inner chamber assembly I believe 02-08 crf 450/250 forks are fairly similar, only thing different from the 450 to a 250 is the spring rate... Also brand new assemblies are only 89 dollars from partzilla (great place to find OEM parts)

You just need a cap, probably. Call some suspension shops. They may have a "totalled" fork that has a good cap.

I still love the title of this thread. The sprocket itself is leaking oil, not from an area behind it. THIS BIKE has problems. LOL

Finally got around to fixing everything and replacing some of the worn parts. Took it out today and had a blast. We had some rain this weekend so I ended up going to reche canyon and riding some berm tracks. Bike feels great, no complaints really.
