OEM Honda air filter crumbles

Hey all,

I've been using Honda OEM air filters forever. Over the last 2 or so years I've been using the "Classic" No-Toil oil and their detergent to clean the filters. I hadn't raced or ridden the bike in about a month. Went to clean the filter and it just crumbled. The seam were still glued but the outside filter element was toast. The inside element was just fine though. What would cause this? I still have 2 full bottles of the cleaner and classic oil.

Sounds like an old filter to me. Possibly one that had been sitting on a shelf for a while. The foam breaks down over time.

Possibly. It was somewhat new to me from Honda though. I'm wondering if I need to switch to the alcohol free oil from No-Toil.

I have been using the green No Toil for about 5 years now. Mostly on Twin Air filters. Haven’t had any issues. I don’t keep the filters longer than about 2 years as they start looking kinda beat up.

Probably an old filter.

With that said, I hate the No Toil stuff. Never have liked it. Maxima FFT and Maxima Filter cleaner only for me.

Thanks guys. I called No-Toil. Spoke to Ryan over there. He said same thing. Probably an old filter. He did say to send him some pics with my type of bike and they would replace with a NO-Toil filter free of charge.

Now THATS customer service.

The no toil product and company are the SHIT. Plus, when you run out of their earner you can save some coin by using oxiclean. Then you can clean them in the kitchen sink. Clean filter AND sink when you're done, win win.

Filter oils will break down the filter foam if left on them a few months. Always clean and store dry used filters.

PAW PAW, I really think this is the case. Ive ALWAYS had great luck with OEM filters. This filter did sit lubed for a few months at least.

So I just checked my YZ250 filter that’s been sitting in the bike since October 2017 when I blew up the transmission. The filter oil is still tacky and the foam is in great shape still. It’s a No Toil brand filter.

Any way to check this? Will they fall apart in your hands or is it when you wash them? Was going to ride this week for the first of the year but now youve got me second guessing Laughing I did the filter when I put the bike away in case I was able to get out one more time and had to junk my spare Definitley dont want to find out mines junk when its too late.

I keep at least three filters pre oiled in ziplock bags to put in rotation. I’m Running NoToil filters, green no toil oil. Possibly alcohol oils (classic red) are harsher on the foam element but the green (bio) stuff is pretty good and I’ve never had it breakdown my filter, even if sat for months. Too me it’s a no brained NOToil is the best.

I would suggest that you re-oil your air filter. Gravity will pull the oil toward the bottom of the filter over time. Kawasaki even had a dealer tech tip about re-oiling filters on new bikes that were sold from the showroom floor after setting for a while.

I had this happen. I use to wash filters then have them sit in my garage window . The uv destroyed 2 of them. Sun will break down foam fast

Funny thing is that I had exactly the same thing happen when I switched over to no toil. I never had the problem before or after using no toil. Is that a coincidence or an ussue with no toil? I have no idea but I just got deja vu reading this thread.
