Hi, just bought a KTM sx 150 in fairly standard spec just has full fmf. Anyone recommend any mods worth doing for this bike? Any tips on what gearing I should run etc. Not ridden for a few years so excited to get back to it!

If it is a 17 or 18, get a Keihin carb on that thing first.

It’s an old one 2011 but I’m buying it from a friend who’s had it from new and only ridden it a handful of times so it’s mint

Great bike, just change fluids, ideally service the suspension , clean or re place the air filter, make sure the carb is clean... if you are really a go getter, clean/grease bearings and go ride.

Agreed!! I think the greasing of the linkage/swingarm components and the steering head are crucial!!

Have fun with your new toy, the 150s are a complete blast!!!

17/18 suffers from crappy factory jetting compounded by a shitty Reed valve. In my opinion bare minimum mods would be JD jet kit and new Reed block. I personally like 13/50 gearing.

Since this is an older thread this one has come up. So if you're having jetting issues then here is your fix.

Study up on the fitment of the air cleaner in the airbox. Only fits one way and if you don't get it properly seated you'll suck dirt. Ask me how I know....Blush

Might suggest the Twin Air alloy frame and specific filters for it.

Check swingarm side to side play and add shim washers if there is any movement. Also add shim washers to motor mounts if there is gaps between mounting brackets and engine cases when mounting bolts are loosened. Check motor mounting bolts and swingarm bolt torque after every ride

The motor tends to detonate easily. Run race fuel or use thick cylinder base gasket

Put new tires, and new decals on it. Sell it and buy a Yamaha 250f. Best mod you could do.

The older ones are a little more difficult to fully seat. Its possible to have the filter off the base but it looks seated. KTM revised their set up so people quit destroying top ends

The one I have bought is 2011 so are you saying I should upgrade the airbox?

The 11' frames are completely different than 16' - 19' so the airboxes wont swap .
The older airboxes need special attention to seat the filter properly

I have nothing to add apart from I had a 2011 150sx that I got new in 2010. Seriously quick and bullet proof, that bike went through some serious abuse lol. One day I will get another one just because I have such great memories with that bike. Enjoy!
