Hi guys
Just bought my 4 year old a KTM 50, he's got a PW 50 aswell. The KTM is just too much for him at the moment. If I adjust the clutch to the first few clicks will it make it rideable. Or is there a way of restricting the throttle too? Someone in local bike shop said something about jubilee clip and piece of metal
Cheers

I used one of these when my son went from a PW 50 to a KTM 50, worked great, bike barely moves. As he feels more comfortable on the KTM start drilling out the restrictor just a little to give it more power. I drilled ours out 3 or 4 times then tossed it completely.

What about retarding the timing to kill power?

No mini expert but I started my little guy at 3 clicks after we had a scary moment the first time he tried it at the stock settings. 3 clicks allowed the the clutch to engage super low in the rpms well before the power band. Doesn't help with the hit once he gets up to speed and into the power band (we had a couple head jerk moments) but he could rock the bike even in slow and technical areas like a small back yard.

He was real little when he started on the mini. He was on his oset for about a year before I pulled the trigger a little early on the 50 mini 3 months before he turned 3. One thing I was researching was a wireless kill switch so I could shut the bike off if he got himself into a wiskey throttle scenario but he was excited to get right on it after i brought it home so that never became reality. The new clutches on the ktm are really a game changer.

I saw the full detune kit. I may get this but it's the holidays and it would be hard to get one here in Wales
Thanks for reply

So cute
And so little there

I tried my boy on standard setting, way too much power for him

I've now put it on 3 clicks

And also a homemade throttle restrictor

I put a clip around the throttle grip with a piece of metal out the front so it Hits the break lever before full throttle

I will be patient and every now and then do a click on the clutch and a bit more movement on throttle restrictor

Thanks for the replies

I just hope 2021 is a little different so we can have more ride time

You can adjust the clutch right out and that will help. You can also put a rag over the air filter to choke it off a bit, I had to do that when I bought my daughter a yz65. Once he gets used to the power take the rag off the air filter to open it back up again

If you can't get one due to the holidays, take the exh pipe off and take it to the local hardware store and find a flat washer that fits inside the exh pipe and bolt it back up.
Your PW50 has that same thing in it now unless you removed it already, it may fit.
Good luck-

^^This right here!

I started my son on a KX65 moving from a PW80 last January using the washer in the pipe method and it worked perfectly. By the end of Feb I removed the washer. Almost 1 year later were on YZ65 and he's worked his way towards the front of the pack after starting to race in July.

You can also take a small piece of pipe (copper, PVC, etc), cut a slit down the side for easy installation, and put it on top of the slide. Instant throttle limiter; easily modified by cutting it or putting shorter lengths in there.

I've still not got round to this
He has an oset Mx 10 which is ideal both at track and local fields

I want to get him back on the KTM
The exhaust restrictor is out of stock
Any ideas what size washer I would need to fit between exhaust and engine

Thanks

We used the small piece of PVC pipe for our friends kid. Easy to install, cut to whatever we needed and train using the throttle wisely. Clutch adjustment was a major help as well. Having both instilled confidence and time to work on using brakes, keeping feet on pegs, controlling the bike, etc.

I'd prefer to go down the route of putting an exhaust restrictor in
I've had carb problems on other bikes when I've put inserts in

I tried last night to take exhaust off
There are 3 bolts on exhaust flange going onto cylinder
2 I got to the 3rd seemed impossible

Any advice please

Please tell me, what was the inner diameter of this part?

I made a restrictor for the exhaust with a M16 stainless steel washer, with some 19mm stainless pipe welded to each side. Similar to the picture below. It wasn't in long and then it came out and he managed the power
