Is it safe to run more oil than specified in 2016 YZ250F and 2020 YZ450F?

Hi,

I'm new-ish to Yamaha 4-strokes and I've currently got a 2016 YZ250F and a 2020 YZ450F.

LOVE, LOVE these bikes, but … they have such small oil capacities. CRAZY SMALL.

Has anyone successfully run more oil in these models long term? It makes me really nervous to run a mere ~ 700-cc of oil … I'd like to run at least a quart.

Anyone input is appreciated!

I run to the very top of the sight glass when the bike is level.

just put the correct amount it. Over filling the bike can causes issues/ damage.

No matter what I always ran 700cc it would bring the oil right to the top of the sight glass.

FYI you shouldn't over fill any modern 4 stroke mx bike.

50cc is not going to affect it in a negative way. The manual states anywhere in between the two hash marks are fine. No one is saying to throw half a litre more than the manual recommends.

Super help guys.

My hope was that 100 of you would say "oh yeah, Team Yamaha runs 1.5 quarts - for sure it's safe and I've been doing it for years without issue …"

Years ago, per Rekluse's recommendation I started running a quart of oil in the transmission side of my 2007 and 2008 CRF450Rs. It worked great and I loved the extra load-bearing capacity. But on the engine side, I was very aware of the potential to disrupt key oil-spray pathways if I overfilled.

A girl can hope.

But it is best to trust the engineers here, I agree.

But if Team Yamaha chimes in with different advice, I'd like to hear it ...

I got that but the OP was talking about using at least a quart. Which is 300cc + more.....

I used to run a bit extra in my kx250f to try and get more life out of the clutch.

many race teams sometimes actually run a bit less oil to reduce drag inside the engine.
